Thank you to everyone who came to visit my studio during the Margaret River Region Open Studios event. It was lovely to see you all and to share some stories. An afternoon in the studio with ceramic artist Shelley McNab. Shelley usually creates her pieces on the wheel, but during my visit she showed me a process sheโ€™s recently been exploring, Karinuki, a traditional Japanese hand building technique. Beginning with a solid block of clay, the form is carved from the outside before being carefully hollowed from within. Unlike throwing on the wheel, Kurinuki is shaped through subtraction, slowly revealing the final form by taking clay away. Shelley has only experimented with the technique a handful of times, which made it especially lovely to document the process as she explored something a little different from her usual practice. Lovely to meet June today. She spotted a little sculpture on my shelf called โ€œPine-rometric Coneโ€! In had to expain that it was a combination of my strange sense of humor and a few firings that helped to create this piece. The sculpture is made with several fired pyrometric cones. These are used in the kiln to indicate heat work. They will bend once a particular amount of heat work (firing temperature and duration) has occurred. The fired cones were arranged into the shape of a pine coneโ€ฆbecoming the โ€œPine-rometric Coneโ€. Most definitely a more bizarre and inriguing sculpture. June said it would fit in well with one of her more unusual collections. Iโ€™m open everyday now for the remainder of the Margaret River Region Open Studios event. Iโ€™m open today for the Margaret River Region Open Studios event! 10am - 4pm. I have some new pieces fresh from the kiln! Faceted shino bowls and little pouring bowls fresh out of the kiln! Also a new big big jar with moss green colours and fractured shino glaze. Please drop in to see woodfired pieces, hand built kilns and my creative working space. Feature pieces are ikebana containers, big jars, woodfired sculptures, sake flasks, wall hangings, porcelain earrings and mugs for your coffee! Make a pinch pot while you are here! No booking required. A new release of a special set of six wall tiles designed around the Noongar seasons is on display. These are framed with sustainably sourced local marri timber. โ€˜Snowflake Stormโ€™ a hanging porcelain installation will also be on display. A bunch of brilliant pot makers joined me in the studio yesterday to make a suiban; one of the Japanese ikebana container forms. We had a great time coil building our containers and then decorating the outer surface with a granite and feldspar aggregate. Our finished containers can be used for ikebana (flower aranging) or for suiseki (displaying a rock). Iโ€™m excited to glaze and fire these pieces. Well done everyone.
