POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It was a busy Saturday at @uncwilmington as I led an activity at @marinequestuncw STEM Expo with the Ramirez lab on sea turtle biology, then attended the @uncw_csurf Showcase to see Undergraduate (UG) researchers present their work!

I throughly enjoy sharing my passion about sea turtle biology and conservation with the public! It was an amazing event πŸ’πŸ«€πŸ«πŸ”¬πŸ’!

Then, I was blown away by undergraduates who presented their research at the CSURF Showcase! Congratulations, to everyone! πŸ”¬πŸ§‘β€πŸ”¬πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ§¬πŸ§ͺ

And I was honored to hear that I WON AN AWARD, as an Undergraduate Research Mentor! πŸŽ‰πŸ€©πŸ˜Š

And Ramirez Lab UGs, Jess & Olivia, were also named
Distinguished Undergraduate Research Scholars!!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ‘ @jesshufh @futuredrtrahan

It’s an honor to mentor incredible students, and see their progress over time. It’s been such a rewarding experience! πŸ’“

I feel lucky every day as a marine biologist. Even with the current political climate, my passion for sharing why science matters remains high! πŸ’“

5 tips for getting into the marine sciences πŸŒŠπŸ πŸ™πŸ¬πŸ’πŸ¦ˆπŸ‘πŸ‹πŸ¦‘πŸŸπŸͺΌπŸ¦from a current Ph.D. researcher in Marine Biology:

- 1. Get an idea of the field that you’re interested in. Email the experts/professionals in that field, do your research on what that field looks like and be genuine about your interest in their field.
- 2. Get as many experiences as possible. I view a career like adding tools, or skills, to your toolbelt overtime, becoming more and more qualified for the field that you want to enter.
- 3. Find and maintain good mentorships. Keep in contact with your mentors and update them on your research interests and job search.
- 4. Network, network, network! Put yourself in the room where these professionals will be so they can put your face to your name and demonstrate your proficiencies.
- 5. Put yourself out there and be persistent. FOR EXAMPLE: send cold emails, apply for internships, volunteer in your community, take random, classes you’re interested in, etc.
- Above all else, try and learn what you DONT want to do! This is just as important as knowing what you want to pursue! Good luck!!! πŸ™πŸ’πŸͺΌπŸ¦πŸ¦‘πŸŒŠπŸ¦€πŸ¦ˆπŸ¬

Extracting fish otoliths without trending audio from a red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) 🐟🐠

Otoliths are used to calculate a fish’s age by counting annually deposited growth rings, similar to counting tree rings.

Red snapper can live up to 40 years old, and inhabit benthic hard-bottom reefs in the western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

This permitted collection was performed during a reef fish survey in the U.S. south Atlantic this past summer to assess reef biodiversity and species abundance.

UNCW’s Center for Marine Science Open House was a BLAST! @uncwilmington @uncwcms πŸŒŠβ›΄οΈπŸ”¬πŸŸ

This past Saturday, UNCW’s CMS and the recently commissioned, R/V Osprey, were open to the public. I helped operate vessel tours at the dock while showcasing incredible research occurring at UNCW.

Over 500 people visited CMS within 5hrs, from which ~200 toured the research vessel. With this 78ft aluminum research catamaran, UNCW students are able to use state-of-the-art equipment, learn practical skills, and collaborate with faculty and community organizations.

With a lab like the Center for Marine Science and a research vessel like the Osprey, UNCW students can soar to their fullest potential! πŸŒŠπŸŸβ›΄οΈπŸ”¬

Wildlife Cam - part 2!

While attending the International Sea Turtle Symposium in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii this past March, I saw SO MANY cool species of wildlife!

Here are just a few:
- Pacific bottlenose dolphins
- Humpback whales
- Hammerhead sharks
- Volcanoes (sorta wildlife 😜)
- Fish farms (Aquaculture pens)
- Green sea turtles (Honu)
- Hawaiian Monk seals
- I’iwis

Teaching Animal Physiology Lab (BIO345) at @uncwilmington in @uncw_bamb and @uncwgradschool as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. πŸ¦€πŸ’¦πŸ’‰πŸŒŠπŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬πŸ§‘β€πŸ”¬

Today’s lab assessed the osmoregulatory abilities of green crabs at different salinities, by measuring the osmolality (mmol/kg) of the surrounding seawater and comparing it to the internal osmolality of crab hemolymph (the β€˜blood’ of invertebrates).

Osmoregulation is the process animals use to maintain the balance of water and solutes (EX., Na, Cl, Mg, etc.) in their bodies. This process affects muscle movement, nerve communication, cellular functions, and much more!

We found that green crabs osmoregulate at 28ppt and 35ppt, although they’re close to conforming at this higher salinity. In other words, they are actively pumping ions in/out to maintain a stable internal osmolality, until the external osmolality matches their desired internal.

This lab provides great opportunities for students to connect fundamental physiological concepts with real-world applications and practice transferable lab skills, like animal handling and pipetting!

Comment below with any questions, and thanks for watching!

All crabs are well taken care of. IACUC rules for invertebrates are followed.

#pov - imaging stained sections of sea turtle humerus bones to estimate age, similar to counting tree rings

We use histology and microscopy to section, decalcify, section again, stain, and image sea turtle humerus bones for age estimation.

We work with partners all across the US who collect and salvage skeletal remains from stranded turtles for us to reconstruct population metrics (ex: age structure, growth trajectories, sex ratios, etc.)

Have any Q’s? Comment below. πŸ‘‡

All work is permitted research (NC WRC ESP-25ST41 issued to Dr. Matthew Ramirez).
