Things I wish I knew before becoming a black nail tech PART 2:

1. Ok bookies we’re gonna jump straight into this one. First things first, having your skill constantly questioned or highly doubted 🙄Y’all know what I’m talking about. You wanna know my entire background, how many clients I’ve had prior to you, if I’m licensed, who taught me, am I sure I’m capable, etc but go to the chop shops and be seated with a non licensed “tech” and allow her to put the worse nails imaginable on you and won’t bat an eye. But I get put through a rigorous questionnaire on if I’m capable enough for you.

2. Lack of unity amongst your peers or fellow techs. This is definitely NOT all but there’s a bunch. It’s like they want you to do well… at first. But not too well or better than them. Gatekeeping can be added to this list as well but I’ll touch on that another time.

3. Being watched and/or followed while trying to shop at the nail supply stores! Omg! This is so hard because sometimes I have last minute clients and have to run to the nail supply to pick up items and they treat me so bad. Literally watching through the aisles and following closely behind me. First of all you have to have a license to shop at these places. So why would I jeopardize my license and freedom to steal a couple of charms or gel polish. It’s to the point where I 100% order my supplies online now. Granted all the stores in my area dont do this but I just decided to shop online only.

4. Having a fear or afraid to charge your worth for fear of losing clients. The way I’ve learned to deal with this is to understand that there will be “customers” and there will be “clients.” Your clients will never leave because they enjoy paying good money for quality work and skill. Plus they become family and there’s a bond that is made. Customers are those that are only there for a good time not a long time. They come and go and are not loyal and usually only pop in when there’s a special or discount. Know the difference and charge your worth. Your ppl will stay with you. I promise.

Things I wish I knew before becoming a black nail tech:

1. First things first, little or NO support from family and friends. Now when I first became licensed and was still in my “practicing” phase this didn’t bother me too much. But once I started to gain experience and really perfect my craft I couldn’t understand why my family and friends would skip over me to run to the “chop shops” and let them put poison on their fingers. Then they would complain to me about how much they hated their nails and the damage being done but they continued to spend money with them.

2. Being an afterthought. Now this still happens today lol. I cannot tell you how many times I hear girl I’ve been following you for years and finally decided to book 😂 While I appreciate the booking, why does it have to take YEARS before you come get your nails done if you like my work? Then y’all wait till y’all nails are in the worse shape ever to finally say ok I guess I’ll book with Seaux now 🤦🏾‍♀️

3. That most salons have unethical practices. Before and during working for myself I worked for a few traditional nail salons. I couldn’t believe some of the things that I saw. Things like reusing old paraffin wax, using MMA products, washing/reusing pedi slippers and toe separators, and much more. Idk how they do it but I just cant and won’t.

4. Not having room for error or mistakes. Ok I’m human, so of course I make mistakes and things happen. But if something happens I don’t expect to get written off for it. For example, if you leave and your gel peels the same day let me know and I’ll fix it, if my kids need me or there’s an emergency and I have to reschedule don’t be upset and decide you won’t come back. It’s like I try so hard to please everyone and when you’re pleased it’s all good but as soon as something not so pleasing happens you run to bash me or worse. Yet chop shops been disappointing you for years but you don’t miss a beat going back to them 🤷🏾‍♀️

FLASHBACK FRIDAY✨ my baby was 6 years old here and this was her first gel set. She was peeling the regular polish off and biting her nails so I decided to start her on gel. Shes 10 now and gets Gel X fullsets. If I go too long in between refills she’ll start biting and picking again. It’s such a struggle trying to prevent her from biting but I find keeping her nails done helps a lot. Just in case any other mommas are dealing with the same issue.
