🐙 CELEBRATE WORLD OCTOPUS DAY! UMI IS LIVE!

The @pangeaseed team are celebrating one of the ocean’s most extraordinary creatures with a brand-new Printed Oceans release from returning artist @scottlistfield!

Meet UMI, a thought-provoking glimpse into a future where rising seas blur the boundaries between our world and the ocean, and an octopus finds an unexpected new place to call home.

Octopuses are remarkable problem-solvers, masters of camouflage, and important members of marine food webs. But the ecosystems they depend on are increasingly threatened by warming waters, pollution, and climate change.

Scott’s artwork invites us to imagine a changing world and consider a simple question: What kind of ocean are we leaving behind?

To celebrate World Octopus Day, we’re releasing UMI in two beautiful, signed and numbered limited editions:

🐙 UMI by Scott Listfield
* Regular Edition of 50 | 16 × 16 inches
* Variant Edition of 25 | 24 × 24 inches
* Fine art printing by @staticmedium

AVAILABLE NOW at shop.pangeaseed.org

Every purchase helps support PangeaSeed’s ocean conservation and educational outreach efforts around the world.

Eight arms. One ocean. A future worth protecting.

A look at “The Choice,” a new mural by artist Tracie Ching (@tracieching) for the Off The Table (@takeitoffthetable) campaign in Manhattan, produced and revealed in time for New York Climate Week.

The artwork explores the choices we make at the table and their impact beyond it, encouraging viewers to take a closer look at ocean-farmed salmon and consider why so many chefs, restaurants, and diners are choosing to take it Off The Table to help protect wild salmon.

@PangeaSeed worked with the team to help bring the project from brief to final artwork, leading artist curation and coordination, creative direction, and the design process with Tracie. It was a detailed collaboration and it’s rewarding to finally see the work translated from screen to wall.

We are the ocean. 🌊

Indigenous Peoples’ Day was yesterday, but celebrating Indigenous creativity, learning from Indigenous knowledge, and supporting Indigenous leadership matter every day.

“We Are the Ocean” by Shar Tuiʻasoa | @punkyaloha, part of @pangeaseed’s Printed Oceans program, invites us to deepen those connections. Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Shar draws on her Pacific Islander heritage to create bold, joyful artwork that celebrates Oceania’s people, cultures, and places.

Here, a Polynesian woman sits partly submerged among whales, coral, and marine life. Shar describes the ocean as a source of nourishment, spirituality, and cultural identity. The conch shell connects to ancestral knowledge, while the fishing net over her shoulder speaks to our responsibility to care for marine ecosystems.

Across the Pacific, the ocean connects communities through voyaging, family, exchange, and shared histories. Indigenous peoples’ distinct knowledge systems, sustained through generations of observation and practice, continue to guide stewardship and responses to environmental change.

Caring for the ocean also means supporting cultural continuity, food security, and Indigenous peoples’ rights to shape the future of their lands and waters.

Through art and storytelling, PangeaSeed creates public platforms for perspectives like Shar’s to educate and inspire ocean communities around the world. These stories deserve attention year-round, and the people behind them deserve ongoing support.

Learn from Indigenous voices, support Indigenous artists and educators. Contribute to Indigenous-led stewardship. Let the connections we make through art become part of how we care for the ocean and one another.

What Indigenous artist, storyteller, or community initiative would you love more people to know about?

An ocean of knowledge, carried across generations. 🌊

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and leadership through this mural by @techs_x, created in Gisborne, Aotearoa New Zealand, in 2018 for @pangeaseed’s @seawalls_ Artists for Oceans program.

The portrait celebrates Papa Mau Piailug, the master navigator from Satawal in Micronesia whose generosity helped renew voyaging traditions across the Pacific.
In 1976, Mau guided Hōkūleʻa from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti without modern navigational instruments, reading the stars, ocean swells, and other natural signs across thousands of miles of open ocean.

By sharing his knowledge with navigators including Nainoa Thompson, Mau helped inspire a resurgence of voyaging, cultural pride, and connection. Fifty years later, his legacy lives on through those carrying his teachings forward.

Through our ocean advocacy and public art projects, PangeaSeed strives to give essential stories like Mau’s a public platform. Bringing them into everyday spaces creates opportunities to learn, connect, and inspire ocean communities around the world.

His legacy reminds us that ocean literacy includes Indigenous knowledge sustained through generations of observation, practice, and relationships with the sea. Honoring it means supporting Indigenous peoples’ rights and leadership in caring for their lands and waters.

Today and every day, seek out Indigenous stories, support Indigenous artists and educators, and champion community-led voyaging and stewardship.

What knowledge will we help carry forward?

A park visit can spark more than an afternoon of play. This mural on the Oregon coast still has us thinking about how art can inspire people to get to know the place they call home. 🌊

At Schooner Creek Discovery Park in Lincoln City, Oregon, artist Jeremy Nichols (@plasticbirdie) transformed the Entry Plaza into a vibrant celebration of life where land and water meet.

Spread wings, shimmering fish, butterflies, a crab, and an elk…there’s plenty to discover on both sides of this wall. Against glowing yellows, oranges, and pinks, Jeremy brings the coast’s wildlife into the spotlight.

Look closer, and the artwork offers a reminder: these animals share a landscape that connects forest, creek, estuary, and ocean. Estuaries, where freshwater meets saltwater, provide important feeding grounds for birds and sheltered places for young fish to grow. Caring for the coast means caring for those connections, too.

With the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve nearby, the surrounding ecology helped inform the creative process. @pangeaseed connected Jeremy with local experts to explore Lincoln City’s wildlife, coastal character, and community before he brought it all together in his signature style.
From the first layers of paint to the finished mural, these photos show how a welcoming public space can also become a starting point for discovery. Come for the playground, leave curious about the neighbors with wings, fins, and antlers.

Big thanks to Jeremy, @lincolncityor, @lincolncityparksandrecreation, and everyone who helped make this project possible.

Today, we’re revisiting one of our favorite community education murals created this year and taking a deep dive into the ocean’s twilight zone. 🌊

“Mesopelagic” by @dcypher_dtrcbs x @plastickotetears brings the deep ocean to the streets of downtown Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand, inviting passersby to explore a world usually hidden beneath the waves.

Imagine descending 200 to 1,000 meters below the surface. Sunlight fades, pressure builds, and you enter the mesopelagic zone: a vast, mysterious habitat filled with extraordinary marine life.

And things get busy after dark. Many twilight zone animals travel toward the surface to feed at night, then return to deeper waters during the day. These daily journeys help move carbon into the deep ocean, connecting the lives of tiny creatures to the health of our planet.

Developed with Earth and marine scientist Joyce Yager, this mural turns a city wall into an outdoor ocean classroom. Its cross section maps the ocean’s layers, using species, depth measurements, and visual clues to make the science accessible to anyone walking past.

That’s the power of public art: a moment of curiosity on your daily commute can become a whole new connection to the ocean and a reason to care for what lives below.

Take a closer look. What creature or detail catches your eye first? 👀

🐙 World Octopus Day is almost here, and we’re celebrating with new art for the ocean.

This Thursday, renowned artist @scottlistfield returns to @PangeaSeed’s Printed Oceans with UMI, a new limited-edition release imagining a future where rising seas have begun to blur the boundaries between our world and theirs.

Octopuses play an important role in marine food webs, both as predators and as prey for other ocean wildlife. But like so much marine life, the ecosystems they depend on are being reshaped by warming waters, pollution, ocean acidification, and other human-driven pressures.

UMI, meaning “ocean” in Japanese, asks us to consider that changing relationship and a simple question: What kind of ocean are we leaving behind?

Two very limited signed and numbered editions, included the featured XL variant, drop Thursday, October 8 at 12 PM PST, in celebration of World Octopus Day.

🌊🎨 Art can make us stop, look closer, and care. For species at risk, that connection can be powerful.

Today is World Animal Day, and we’re celebrating the artists who help give threatened wildlife a creative voice bringing their beauty, vulnerability, and stories into view.

Through @PangeaSeed’s Printed Oceans program, artists transform ocean conservation issues into original artworks and fine art print editions. Each work invites us to discover the life beneath the surface, understand the pressures animals face, and consider our role in protecting their future.

A painting can spark curiosity about an unfamiliar species. A print on your wall can start a conversation that keeps its story alive. And that connection can inspire action beyond the artwork.

Swipe through for original works created for Printed Oceans. These artists remind us how much there is to love and how much we stand to lose.

You can help keep this work going. Purchasing a print directly supports PangeaSeed’s art and education programs, helping us bring attention to species at risk, build ocean literacy, and inspire communities to protect the animals and habitats that need us.

Bring a little ocean inspiration into your home and help its impact reach further.

Explore available editions at shop.pangeaseed.org or through the link in our bio.

Which artwork makes you pause? Tell us below.

A title that puts a person beside the sea can make you wonder about the space between them.

@ericarosey’s “Old Man and the Sea” invites us to linger in that space. The ocean can feel familiar and unknowable at once. We bring our own stories to it, while its life and rhythms carry on far beyond us.

Created for Between the Sea & Me, our exhibition with @europagalleryseattle, this artwork asks a question we keep returning to at @PangeaSeed: How does our relationship with the ocean change when we take the time to look and listen?

What can a tide pool teach us about living together? 🌊

In Tide Pools, artist @kenichaffee for @pangeaseed, finds a tiny world shaped by change. As the water rises and recedes, its inhabitants adapt, share space, and depend on one another. For Kenichiro, these “jewel boxes” offer a vision of community that values diversity, connection, and care.

They also remind us to follow a rhythm beyond constant work: there’s a time to explore and a time to close the door, rest, and recharge.

The next time you find a tide pool, take a moment to look closer. What might we learn from the life inside it?
