Little mechanical furniture mashup. My interest has never been in furniture or craft but in transforming reality by thinking of new possibilities and designing the systems of parts that need to come together to make a desired change happen. It doesn’t matter if the challenge is in the realm of furniture, product design, public services, art, public art or software. New functional sculpture, shelf design, art installation or however the institutional farts of Arts and Design academia would prefer to call this big beautiful bastard child. Who cares if it’s art or design as long as it’s satisfying and you want it? A crossbreed mutt of disciplines, this “thing” is deeply satisfying to me. I could ramble about how great it feels to steal key exponents of the foundation of western art and use them as mere cinder blocks for decadent, glorified, functional decorative designs; as a mirror of our masturbatory selfish times...I could also talk about how I feel the arts as we know are quickly dying; entering a terminal fase of decay while everyone is oblivious to their peril. That this piece feels like a relic of the era of sculptures and the era of books. A historic reminder of a more naïf time that no one has time to remember.Nevertheless for that we would at least need a common fertile ground of awareness that could provide a foundation over which these conversations could flourish. So it’s easier to just focus on the easier:Giving a middle finger to the arbitrators and the rule books of what our long standing disciplines of art and design are supposed to be. And there, this big functional sculpture stands unapologetic and in disregard for the painfully boring puritan traditions that require that fine art should never reduce itself to actually have a function. And design should always look with contempt at the superfluous poetic fumblings of its bohemian counterparts...Those were always stupid rules to begin with anyways. Why be restricted to speaking only one language if we can learn a second or third one and now write stories that borrow unique words that only exist in foreign cultures? Why speak one language, when we can learn many and by doing so enhance our understanding of our common syntax and start to scratch at the understanding of how our process of understanding is constructed?Thank you to my small team for their talent and endurance to help develop these projects so they can be shared and seen. #interiordesign #interiordesigner #interiorarchitecture #collectibledesign #designart by @sebastianstudio
