A book for when you need life to feel a little softer. 🤍

Welcome to Hyunam-dong Bookshop is the kind of book that quietly reminds you that you don’t need to have everything figured out.

Sometimes you just need a place where you feel comfortable.
People who understand you.
Something you love doing.
A little community that slowly becomes yours.

I loved watching these characters find their way toward the things that make life feel meaningful — and discovering that happiness doesn’t always have to be something big or extraordinary.

Sometimes it’s a bookshop.
A conversation.
A cup of coffee.
A favourite book.
A person who gets you.
A little corner of the world that feels like home. 🌿

Maybe happiness can be simple.

And honestly, what a lovely thing to be reminded of. 🤍📚 #bookstagram #welcometohyunamdongbookshop #hwangboreum #cozyreads #feelgoodbook Welcome to Hyunam-dong Bookshop, Hwang Bo-reum, Hyunam-dong Bookshop review, cozy books, feel good books, comforting books, gentle books, books about finding yourself, books about community, books about friendship, books about bookshops, books about happiness, books about purpose, slice of life books, cozy reading, book recommendations, book review, book reels, bookstagram, reading life taken in Dubai,UAE by @secondchapterjournal

Yesteryear — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’ve never heard of Yesteryear, the setup is this: Natalie is a social-media influencer who has built her identity around the perfect traditional life — homemaking, motherhood, rural living and all of it.

Then she wakes up in what appears to be 1855, living that life for real.

And from there… things get VERY strange.

The first 100 pages were honestly a struggle for me. It was slow, detailed, and I wasn’t particularly invested. I mostly just wanted to know where the story was going.

Then the story shifted, and suddenly I couldn’t look at it the same way.

Natalie’s perception of reality becomes increasingly fractured, the pioneer-life situation gets stranger, and the further I went, the more I started questioning everything.

And here’s the weirdest part:

I was frustrated with almost every character in this book. 😂

Natalie frustrated me.
Caleb frustrated me.
Their choices frustrated me.
The fact that I couldn’t fully understand what was happening frustrated me.

And yet… I couldn’t stop reading.

Natalie especially messed with my head because I spent so much of the book trying to understand her. I kept making excuses for her, thinking maybe she wasn’t as bad as everyone thought..

Then the truth came out and I was basically:

WHY DID I DEFEND YOU?! 😭

Normally, when I finish a book, even if I don’t love it, I can tell you what the author was trying to do.

With Yesteryear, I’m still sitting here thinking:

Was I supposed to be frustrated?
Was I supposed to feel trapped inside Natalie’s reality?
Was I supposed to question my own sympathy for her?
Was the lack of satisfaction intentional?

And maybe that’s the point.

Because if the author wanted me to feel as confused, trapped, frustrated and unsettled as Natalie… then maybe this was actually very clever.

So, should you read it?

If you’re okay with a slow start, psychological weirdness, unreliable reality, frustrating characters and finishing a book with more questions than answers…

I think it’s worth picking up...

Book Lovers — Emily Henry ⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Nora Stephens is a literary agent who knows exactly what she wants, has a reputation for being a little intimidating, and is very much not the small-town-romance type. 😂

Then her sister Libby convinces her to spend a month in Sunshine Falls, the kind of tiny town that seems designed for a completely different kind of heroine. Nora expects a quiet break and some sister time… until she keeps running into Charlie Lastra, a book editor she already knows — and definitely doesn’t expect to find there.

What I loved most was Nora and Charlie’s banter. Their conversations were sharp, witty, competitive and genuinely fun to read. It felt like watching two people who actually enjoyed each other’s minds, and the flirting? 👀 Very entertaining.

Surprisingly, though, the relationship that stole my attention was Nora and Libby’s. There was so much love underneath their complicated dynamic, and I really enjoyed watching Nora grow and learn that loving someone also means letting them make their own choices. 🤍

This wasn’t quite my Emily Henry book, but it definitely made me understand why people love her writing. I really enjoyed her style, especially the clever dialogue, and now I’m convinced there’s an Emily Henry book out there that will completely win me over.

There’s something about having a really good reading month that completely messes with your expectations. 😂

You read a bunch of books, find a favourite, maybe have one of those “I’m on a roll” months… and suddenly an ordinary reading month feels like you’ve somehow fallen behind.

So you feel guilty.
You start browsing for more books.
Your TBR mysteriously grows by 17.
And then, with absolutely no evidence to support this confidence, you decide next month you’re going to read twice as much. 😂

Do I have the time? No.
Do I have the reading speed? Also no.
Am I still adding books to the TBR? Unfortunately, yes.

Maybe we don’t need to make up for a slow reading month.

Some months are big reading months. Some are quiet. Some give us favourites. Some just… happen.

There’s no reading debt to repay next month. 🤍

Anyway, excuse me while I add another book to my TBR.

My book journal gets the calm, considered version of my thoughts.

My brain while reading the actual book?
Absolutely not. 😂

Somewhere between “I’m really enjoying this” and the final 4.5⭐ rating, there were approximately 47 moments of:

Wait… what?
I don’t trust her.
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
Okay, this is getting ridiculous. 😂

And somehow, all of that eventually becomes one perfectly reasonable little review.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It really put me through it — and I loved every minute.

🔪 Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano — 4.5⭐

Finlay Donovan is a struggling novelist, a recently divorced mom, and already juggling enough between deadlines, childcare and trying to keep her life together.

Then, while discussing her latest novel in a restaurant, she’s mistaken for a woman who can arrange a murder. 😭

And instead of simply clearing up the misunderstanding… Finlay somehow ends up getting pulled deeper and deeper into the whole mess.

From there, it’s basically one increasingly chaotic situation after another. Every time I thought surely this is where things finally calm down, something else happened — and somehow it just kept getting funnier. 😂

I loved Finlay and Vero, and I had so much fun trying to figure out what was actually going on while watching Finlay make increasingly questionable decisions.

What surprised me most was how consistently entertaining it was. The chaos never felt like it was dragging just for the sake of it; I was genuinely having fun watching everything unravel.

I finished this feeling like I had personally survived Finlay’s week. 😂 And for once, I actually want to continue the series — so obviously, I need to know what kind of trouble she gets herself into next.

Have you read Finlay Donovan? Would you continue the series? 👀

Apparently my TBR has reached the point where the books are starting to review me. 😭

And honestly… Daisy Jones & The Six has a point.

I bought this book because I genuinely wanted to read it. I’ve heard so many good things about it, it’s been sitting on my TBR for far too long, and yet somehow every time I pick my next read, another book mysteriously gets chosen.

At this point, I think Daisy has every right to be disappointed. 😂

The question is… how long can a book stay on your TBR before it starts taking things personally?

Please tell me I’m not the only one with books that have been waiting way too long. 👀

🍋 The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

I really wanted to love this one.

The premise had so many things I usually enjoy — magical realism, romance, food, a little whimsy, and an impossible kind of timing. And honestly, the idea itself? SO good. 👀

But somewhere along the way, I realised I just wasn’t connecting with the story the way I wanted to.

I liked Clementine and Iwan, and I thought the time-slip concept was really imaginative, but I always felt a little distant from Clementine’s world. Even the magical element, which I expected to be completely obsessed with, didn’t quite pull me in.

Still, I can see why this book works for so many people. It was sweet, imaginative and had a lovely idea at its heart — it just wasn’t one I connected with deeply.

Good book. Just not my book. 🍋

Maybe it was simply the wrong book at the wrong time. 🤍

Have you ever read a book you really wanted to love, but just couldn’t connect with?

We spend so much time rating books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite books.
Best books.
Books we’d recommend to everyone.

But sometimes I wonder if that’s really what makes a book memorable.

Maybe one day I’ll be 80 and suddenly remember a book I read decades ago.

Not because it was the best book I’d ever read.

Maybe because I read it during a particular summer. Or while I was travelling. Or during a difficult year. Maybe because of where I was sitting when I read it, who I was then, or what that story meant to me at the time.

We don’t really know which books are going to become memories while we’re reading them.

And maybe that’s one of the loveliest things about reading.

I have no idea which book I’ll remember when I’m 80.

But I hope there’ll be one.

📖

What book do you think you’ll remember when you’re 80?
