Hi all :) my name is Brook and I run Second Helping. In the past I had been trying to post the supper club as something separate, perhaps in a way to legitimize it, but as it has grown I’ve realized how tied together the two of us are. And a lot of people have asked where this started SO

Second helping basically stemmed from a birthday party I threw for myself where I spent the whole day cooking for some of my closest friends. It was a LOT of work, which people usually avoid on their birthday, but it was one of the most fun days I have ever had, & that planted a little seed.

I moved to Chicago not knowing anyone, and the friends I have gained here are not by accident. I had to put in work to find my people and it STILL took me years before I really felt connected. Once I felt at home in chi, I realized I wanted to find a way to have actual community here. Community is now some sort of buzz word, but sincerely, I figured there had to be so many other people like me looking for their people in this big ole city

And the other part - food - has been more in my life than I had ever paid attention to. I thought all 9 year olds made crepes every weekend for 6 months?? Despite this early enthusiasm, my only kitchen experience was in a sketchy dive bar while all my other friends had normal jobs. I was extremely intimidated and shy but everyone said I made the best wraps ⭐️⭐️

I didn’t regain my love for food until I was an adult, & now I love my spot as a home cook. Getting connected to others who CARE about food, meeting chefs + other people in the industry has been one of my favorite parts of this journey. Probably only 2nd to having a license to make whatever I want for yall!!!!

The last part of the supper club, the giving back to local organizations part, stems from wanting to keep something that essentially frivolous (a dinner party) grounded in the realness of living in this world. Nothing exists in a vacuum, & I firmly believe in normalizing conversations around struggle and the orgs who are helping to reduce them.

I honestly love giving away food so when the team at @salomon asked us to hand out 150 lunch boxes for the @chimarathon we said absolutely 🏃‍♀️

after chatting about the goals for the event we found metal bentos that guests could reuse and filled them with:
- garlic focaccia grinder sandwich: salami, capicola, provolone, rocket pesto, giardiniera aioli, romaine, pepperoncini, Italian dressing

- cereal cookie cream pie: cornflake toffee brown butter cookies, miso cookie cream

absolutely loved spending a saturday like this - where should we do our next giveaway?

I’ve stopped shooting film photos of food because unfortunately they rarely turn out. for example - my coconut spirulina whipped cream doesnt even show up blue *sigh*

but also maybe that’s why food looks completely different now than it did before digital cameras - i dont think we’ve ever cared more about how our food looks specifically. & our food may look better now but i wonder if the experience of eating it actually is

this year we hosted in the chicest penthouse oldtown has ever seen at @blueleopard.chicago

our drink menu was soo good with a dirty martini, pickle martini, & a cucumber basil cosmo all using @weberranchvodka 💙

& of course we served chicago dogs ONLY with walking chips + caviar & banana cake bites with miso caramel and cream cheese frosting
