Nate and I have been working on some new songs and arrangements for live shows (hopefully more on the latter soon) so I decided to turn my attic into a music “lab” so I could test out some ideas. This was the first thing I recorded. I love this song. It always puts me in a dreamlike mood and I wanted to create a version to help bring that out. Hope you all enjoy and if you like this I’ll share more small experiments.

We put together a booklet of liner notes, lyrics and credits to include with purchases of the album, set over the graphics @theoenus worked up for the different track reels, in this case ‘Worst Should Happen.’ Producing and recording Find A Way To Hate It has only made us more aware of all the various kinds of assistance and support that goes into making an album, and it was important to us to be able to credit everyone who has helped us make this a reality. From the canals again, a tribute to Nirvana. We were thinking a lot about Nirvana when we recorded Find a Way To Hate It and the influence is probably heard most intensely on Jerusalem. Kurt Cobain’s writing is a wonderful template influence on unrestrained anger and that’s exactly what we wanted to achieve.

“I was spending every night taking my kid to see their mom at the hospital in South London and the weather was horrible. I was pretty ill myself and everything was predicated on conserving enough energy to stay on my feet. I had a very different vision for this song but when I heard Sapheen’s guitar work, it felt like it captured all the feelings I was trying to reference, but wasn’t able to conjure.”

Another treat from the canals, this time a cover of ‘Strangelove.’ Depeche Mode was a really formative band for both of us. They were a huge influence when we were recording Find A Way To Hate It, and so we hope you guys will enjoy this.

“We were walking around Venice in August and it was abominably hot, even at night,” Nate recalls, “and I was apologizing to my friend if it was too presumptuous to offer my advice because, well, I don’t know how it is to be in someone else’s shoes, and all I ever do is talk, but I’ll still try. That feeling of finding yourself against some sort of tide, of being submerged, eventually became Better Swim.”

In something of a rare treat, Saph covers ‘Hate It,’ originally written by Nate, as he continues his wild meander down the eddies and stagnant whorls of England’s canals, their banks so studded with the bleached skeletons of industry as to make Blake himself blush, and bearing the insigna of pod-friend-of-the-band, @lionsledbydonkeyspod. We’ve got a couple more of these sorts of covers banked, as well as some of tracks by other bands. “25 is a bit harder to describe to be honest”’ Sapheen remarks, “because on the one hand it’s about the Eldrich Toryism of the countryside, but it’s also about a man who loves Radiohead and hates women. There’s an aspect of care, but whether that’s care for the performance of old rites themselves, as habitual gestures, or the thing they’re supposed to enact, that’s harder to pin down.”
