This is a strange time to be an American, and a really strange time to be planning — at risk of being reductive — a bunch of fancy dinner parties. While we do this because rent is still due and the world continues to spin and we have a business to run, at the end of the day, we are doubling down on this work being about more than just that. We may just be throwing dinner parties, but we really believe that those dinner parties are important. Dinner is a fundamental right. Sharing it with others, a fundamental joy. It’s a symbol of community to squeeze a little closer together to make room for one more at the table. Right now, when the country is fracturing around us and connection is ever-more difficult to find, gathering together is an act of resistance. Maybe because it’s ephemeral, we don’t think of it as such, but talking to a stranger, with compassion and without agenda, is a revolutionary act. Sharing from the same plate; taking a bite of someone else’s heritage, literally incorporating that into your self; trying something new on purpose; it’s all undeniably important. There are so many other important actions, too: staying informed, taking action, calling your representatives, but also choosing joy, slowing down, taking the time to learn someone else’s story. We are always proud to showcase the creativity and history of people who look different, sound different, think different, and come from a different background than us, because (and we cannot overstate this) we are all better for it. So, we are maintaining business as usual over here, continuing to chase whimsy and try to offer small, simple moments of joy designed to be shared. May they be an escape, a chance to recharge, or a place to learn something from someone you may otherwise never meet. We will always welcome you to the table – as long as you’re with us in welcoming anyone else to sit beside you. It’s a joy to share space, and a privilege to make spaces for sharing. by @secret_supper

Fall flavors, sunny vibes with @seedandspirits behind the bar at our Rockland Supper. She sourced local produce and artisans like @rootwildkombucha and @lucespirits for welcome cocktails, showcasing the abundance of fall in New England. For dessert, she played off Chef Maria’s inspiration of fall flavors “without being pumpkin spice,” and created an espresso-amaro shakerato with @brucatospirits Woodlands Amaro, topped with ginger and cardamom cold foam. Those not imbibing still got to indulge with a version featuring @drinklapos from @thezeroproof Each sip of the night carried a bit of fall spice, some late-summer fruit, and a lot of creative care from the artisans who shaped everything in the glass, from spirit to final shake. by @secret_supper

A few snapshots of cozy corners and beautiful botanicals from our Supper at @19birchlane in Midcoast Maine. The gardens were in their last burst of bloom for the season, colorful flowers and vibrant greens popping against the soft backdrop of grey skies. The grounds beckoned guests to wander through the wet weather before sitting down in the greenhouse for supper, where we could watch the raindrops fall while staying tucked inside, safe and dry and in good company. 📸 @searchingtheshadows by @secret_supper

“Midcoast Maine has the best farmers and artisans around, I think,” explained Chef @mariamcgarvey of @applecroftmaine when discussing the inspiration behind the menu for our Rockland Supper. Many of the ingredients — from carrots grown in her garden to apples from the old orchard she and her husband are reviving on their beautiful property just down the road — had been tended by Maria from soil to plate, cared for every step of the way. “It’s really important to me that I have connection to the soil and the food. It’s really nice to also be outside for a little bit, spend some time in the sun,” she says. Some days, that dedication means spending time over the grill in the rain, but the kiss of woodsmoke and good people to share the fruits of all that labor with are just as exciting as a few hours in the sun, we think. 📸 @searchingtheshadows by @secret_supper

On the last day of summer, we settled into fall with the patter of rain on the greenhouse roof @19birchlane, where we hosted a beautiful Supper by Chef @mariamcgarvey of @applecroftmaine. She brought us the abundance of the changing season, touched it with woodsmoke, and served a beautiful family-style feast to guests from 15 different states, all gathered together in a botanical garden on a finger reaching off the Midcoast of Maine. Despite the wet weather, guests wandered the beautiful gardens during cocktail hour, and the greenhouse seemed to glow against the day’s grey clouds. Inside, the chatter of good conversation filled the air while the chefs stayed warm over their cooking fires just beyond the translucent walls. Much of the produce served was grown down the road in Maria’s own garden, while the welcome cocktails by @seedandspirits showcased local artisans @rootwildkombucha and @lucespirits. For dessert, we traveled away, featuring Mexican vanilla bean in the panna cotta and @brucatospirits amaro in a shakerato cocktail, a warming final sip on the drizzly evening. 📸 @searchingtheshadows by @secret_supper

“The pancake is the vessel, but also the highlight,” explains Chef Brent Foster of @thisishuskyboi about his signature Johnny cakes. Our upcoming Chicago Supper presented by @basilhayden on Thursday, October 1st sold out in two minutes (thank you!), and the waitlist immediately filled with more people than the Supper itself! We’re finally ready for fall. For long-simmering braises and salads still popping with the best of summer. For wines to darken and thicken in body with the ever-earlier fading of the day. For long nights lit by candlelight and the rich jewel tones that finish the year.
