One of the most unsettling films of the 21st century, THE WAILING plays Late Nights this Friday, October 23 at 9:45pm. In this South Korean supernatural thriller from 2016, a foreigner’s mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals, which quickly turns to mass, violent hysteria. As an investigating officer consults a shaman for answers, he unknowingly escalates the situation into something far more dangerous. Looking for a way to soothe those jangled nerves after the film? Leenalchi, the band created and led by Young-Gyu Jang, the composer behind the score for THE WAILING, brings their Seoul pysch-pop to @thedrakeamherst on Saturday, October 31. Tickets are going fast! This screening is co-presented with @secretplanetnoho and @luakabop. by @secretplanetnoho
Who are the musicians behind MADRECUMBIA? Last but not least, please join us in welcoming CARMELO TORRES — one of the OGs of sabanera (savannah) Colombian cumbia and student of Andres Landero. His Los Toscos recording with Secret Planet amigxs Pedrito Ojeda (Romperayo) and Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero) is an essential milestone in Colombia’s incredible legacy mixing traditional and contemporary sounds together to perfection. Tickets to our 11/13 concert with Los Gaiteros, Fruko, and Carmelo Torres are now available — link in bio Thanks to the homies @misterpsychedelia for these informative reels about the Madre Cumbia project 🙏 by @secretplanetnoho
Who are the musicians behind MADRECUMBIA? We HAVE to talk about Fruko. He is broadly considered the godfather of Colombian salsa, starting out as a teen working for Discos Fuentes until he eventually led the first Colombian band to ever play Madison Square Garden. It’s an incredible honor. You can’t miss this. Join us in welcoming Fruko t Holyoke, MA. Tickets to our 11/13 concert with Los Gaiteros, Fruko, and Carmelo Torres are now available — link in bio 🎥: @misterpsychedelia by @secretplanetnoho

One of the most anticipated shows this season is coming up at the end of the month — @leenalchi joins us from South Korea for a special Halloween show. Their singular sound adapts the ancient storytelling form of pansori into an alt-vein of K-pop that reminds us of the weird joyfulness of the Talking Heads, the choral bounce of the B-52s, and the psych funk of Parliament. 4 trained vocalists, 2 bassists, drums, and keyboard. It sounds like nothing that we’ve ever heard before. Give their new album SUGUNGGA a listen — out this month on @luakabop — it absolutely slaps. Joining the bill for this Halloween dance raver is the dynamic duo behind the band Underground System — Domenica Fossati and Peter Matson are getting behind the decks for us!! Not to be missed. Tickets for this show are moving oh so quickly, so don’t wait until the last minute to lock this one in. xo, SP 🪐 by @secretplanetnoho

We’re a week out from our next show in Northampton with @lasguaracheras — an all woman salsa sextet from Cali, Colombia 🇨🇴 they play the @ironhorsenoho on Sunday, Oct 18. Las Guaracheras were born in 2017 in Cali, Colombia, the historic capital of Caleña salsa, as an initiative of percussionists Laura Linares and Mónica Castro. Devoted to the son and guaracha traditions, the pair set out to form an instrumental group that could honor the legacy of the great Cuban guarachera Celia Cruz—whose nickname the ensemble borrows—while updating the sound for a new generation. From the start, the band placed the vibraphone at the center of its arrangements, evoking the classic sextets of Joe Cuba and the New Swing Sextet alongside more contemporary references like Venezuela’s Cadaver Exquisito and NYC’s Grupo Latin Vibe. Onstage, Las Guaracheras channel Latin jazz’s improvisational spirit, treating every song as a chance for each instrumentalist to shine as a solo voice. Their compositions and lyrics revolve around the visibility of women in the Latin music industry, expressing female strength as a source of love, hope, resilience, and creativity. by @secretplanetnoho
