Sometimes, people ask us what our statements are to things that are currently happening in the news. As a platform, we tend to deprioritise making direct statements about things going on in the news. We have been inspired by organisations like @shado.mag and @thenapministry on this matter. This post details our thoughts on this topic, and we’re very open to hearing your thoughts as well so please do leave them in the comments.

Our lovely founder Sophia was honoured to speak at the recent World Health Assembly in Geneva, for the launch of the Out of the Shadows Index, a database which tracks how 60 countries across 6 regions – home to 83% of the world’s children – are preventing and responding to sexual violence against children and adolescents. Sophia came to remind us about the human faces behind the data, and why ‘Serious Joy’ is so important for conversations around sexual abuse and violence. Here are a few of our absolutely favourite quotes from her incredible speech. 🤩

(Also, a huge thanks to @thome.designs for Sophia’s beautiful Vietnamese Áo dài ❤️)

Our latest piece is by Sophia Luu - founder of @secretsworthsharing_ - on an alarming phenomenon she’s discovered in her anti childhood sexual abuse advocacy journey: that anti-drag sentiment - which quickly deteriorates into transphobia) is widely shared under the guise of “child protection.”

Sophia speaks with trans drag king and organiser @theprinceofp3rsia and Ebony, a drag queen and performance artist, to inform her piece. Prince is photographed by Luce le Brocq.

As Sophia writes, “It feels easier for us to point to ‘the other’ when we think about those who sexually abuse children. Often, trans people and drag performers are already othered in society, making it easy for them to become a target.

Many people forget that trans people are four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crimes, including sexual abuse.“

🎨 @fioandfio who says: “The image centres around a group of trans and drag individuals, with two children included in the composition. The presence of the children reflects a key message in the article. The illustration centres the idea that protecting children and supporting trans communities are not opposing aims, but deeply connected. The children sit within or alongside the wider community, not separate from it, suggesting care, solidarity, and shared safety. By including drag figures, the piece also challenges the harmful narrative that drag is inherently unsafe for children. Instead, it celebrates drag as a joyful, creative form of expression that many children can find delight, imagination, and acceptance.”

🎥 Film Club: Black CSA Survivors (The Colour Purple, 1985)

The Colour Purple follows Celie, an African American woman in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. After having two children as a result of her father’s abuse as a teenager, she is married off to an older man without her consent. In the scene we discussed, we saw Celie bonding with her husband’s mistress Shug.

Celie shares with Shug that she has never had a positive sexual experience, which Shug finds surprising. She tells Celie that means she’s still a virgin, before kissing her tenderly, making Celie giggle.

At the event, we discussed how Shug redefines Celie’s sexual history and attempts to wipe her slate clean, while also showing her what tender romantic affection can be like.

🎥 Film Club: Black CSA Survivors (Precious, 2009)

Precious is about a 16-year-old girl who is pregnant by her father for the second time, can’t read or write, and is abused by her mother. When she’s offered a place at an alternative school, she begins a journey toward taking control of her own life. It touches on themes of race, class, abuse, poverty, colourism and body image in 1980s Harlem.

The scene we explored was the one in which Precious’s mother, Mary, finally explains to the social worker why she let the abuse happen. Following this, Precious stands up to her mother and walks away with strength, instead of retreating into her own head the way she does earlier in the film.

Not everyone agreed this was a hopeful ending though. One audience member pointed out that Precious leaves with two children, no money, no support and an HIV diagnosis, so calling it “triumphant” disregards how unsafe her situation still is.

We love when we get to discuss different interpretations of the films we cover and hear our audience members’ opinions. Let us know in the comments which take you agree with? 👇

🎥 Film Club: Black CSA Survivors (Doubt 2008)

Doubt is about a nun with a hunch that a boy is being groomed, and her quest to prove she’s right, despite the doubts of others. (We as the viewer don’t know the truth of the matter — we only get the nun’s perspective). It touches on themes of race, sexuality, abuse and class 1960s US.

The scene we explored was the one in which Mrs Miller, the mother (played by Viola Davis) talks to the nun, Sister Aloysius (played by Meryl Streep). Mrs Miller has to choose between two bad options: leave her son in a school where he might be being abused by the priest, or send him back to a violent home. Her call is that it’s safer to let the abuse continue “just till June.” The group reflected on how this doesn’t necessarily make her an evil mother — more that she faced an impossible choice. They also noticed that Sister Aloysius seems more focused on proving herself right than on actually helping the boy. The boy himself barely gets to speak in the film — everyone else projects their own story onto him. Additionally, Viola Davis has barely any screen time in the movie, yet gives an incredible performance in just a few minutes, which says something about how Black actors often get less screen time but have to work twice as hard to be noticed.
