These are my 2 favourite books of the year so far. I know I will read both again.

@kaetempest - if you can, you should actually listen to this on audio as it is read by him and has bursts of music. I’ve waited so long for this book. I loved it. No spoilers. Book details in stories.

@tomnewlands_ this book was a part of me. An undiagnosed young girl going through her life with ADHD. Sharing how messy our lives can be. Gritty and wonderful. If you are neurodivergent- go read NOW!

Honestly I loved this book. I loved Roisin and felt that I truly knew her.
Following her through the loneliness caused by her dysfunctional family.
She is a lost young soul who meets another lost soul, Red.
The harshness of their story, and many other characters along the way, really is worth nothing less than 5 stars.
Facing alcoholism, drug addiction, drug dealing, abuse, and death it is rarely an easy life for her but yet I felt no horror reading this book just huge sadness. This will of course hit people differently depending on how safe or harsh their lives have been. I found connection.
Starting in the early 1980s (in a small town outside Dublin to the city of London and back) up to 2007. We see the ups and downs of very real lives.
Some times really are so painful and I just wanted to let her, Roisin, know to keep going. My heart broke. I wanted to call her up, be there for her, tell she’ll get through this.

This is truly a kitchen sink drama that put me in mind of films like Poor Cow.

I did not want this book to end. I’m still thinking about Roisin now a day after I finished the book.

5star.

Honestly I think it’s hard to review this book.
It is well written and quite funny but I don’t know why it has so much praise.
I couldn’t really grasp the point of the idea.
We follow an out of work actor taking a role as a black bag and wearing a black bag so no one knows who he is.
The role is an experiment. To learn what is not really that interesting.
As the time continues the black bag persona fills more and more of his time, like he no longer wants to be himself. This does bring strange relationships and experiences.
3.5 for me.

This book let me down.
I have seen so many 5 star reviews that I just expected more.
For a folk horror book I would say there is hardly any horror.
Very little happened until about 50% in.
There are good ideas with the devil character and the Fawn but it’s just more hint than story a lot of the time.
The characters are good but just not strong enough and I got a bit irritated that there wasn’t more bite to the story.
I just found it slow.
But others loved it. So many 5 star reviews.
3.75 stars 🌟

What an incredibly beautiful book about the saddest thing which comes to us all.
This is written from the point of view of Death as a man.
Travis Smith is a kind, gentle soul who visits those close to death and helps them find their final peace.
Travis is a simple soul who has become close to all these people in some way.
He doesn’t clothe them in a black cape or carry any dark traits. He just brings beauty to their passing moments. Almost like he’s the father of passing
of time rather than Death.
During the book Travis takes us to several people, who have very different lives which of course bring us to their deaths. I did find each to be beautiful.
I found similarities, though small, with other books but what I took from it, mostly, is that it is not upsetting nor depressing.
4.5 stars for me. Very much recommend but it won’t be for everyone. 🌟🌟🌟🌟➕

When you support an independent book shop you get so much more.
Allie from @whatthebook_trentham told me about this book and I instantly knew I would want to read it. Though Allie tread carefully because of what I’m going through, she truly is my book dealer.
This is the personal bond you build with independent stores. Allie knows me now. She doesn’t cut corners. She’s there to say “yes this is totally you “ or “no, not for you.” She doesn’t concentrate or viral books, she concentrates on great books, banned books, beautiful books.
This is what we want and deserve as readers!
We are really lucky to have wonderful independent book shops in this area so we need to support them.

Goodness what a book 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year.
A very original story that keeps you locked in.
What is actually going on? Do we ever really know?
A group of students have the task of clearing out an old house.
This house is also full of dreams, memories, and maybe, captured lives. Each character is interesting and wonderfully written. Are they all real? I don’t know.
It really does make you think. The twists and hints will totally drag you in.
I could not put this book down and read the last part twice in search of a clue as to what had really happened.
Dark academia at its finest. Is it a fever dream? Are we experiencing different time lines?
I want to re read this again in a few months to see if my perception changes.
There is not a single flaw in the book for me.
5 stars for every part of the book.

The importance of banned books.
Buy them to read, buy them to not read. But buy them.
3 books I bought on Monday.

This is the first book I’ve read in this collection and I’m in for the long haul!
Very well written novel about kidnapping and collecting young women to be used as “butterflies”.
Be warned, this is not for the faint hearted and I would only recommend if you are used to very dark tales.
This is not, I must add, a slasher type tale.
This really is on a level with your nightmares.
But the tale is realistic and utterly believable. If you know just how crazy people can be and how twisted the brain can get you will be ready to accept something like this has probably actually happened.
The story is told partly by the FBI & partly by Maya, a butterfly now free.
I would have easily given this 5 stars until the end. I felt that was rushed. I will re read the end in a couple of days to see if I still feel that way.
4.5 ✨
