Fresh coast. Fresh start.

One year in Chicago, and each day feels like I’m waking up to a dream as opposed to being awakened from one. Being born and raised four counties north of Chicago, I came back to the area ready for a new beginning after many - albeit fantastic - more years in Washington than I anticipated. Forty days of forty left, and I’ve left it all on the table. If you told me one year ago that my life would have changed this drastically, I don’t know if I would have believed you. However, what I do know is that everything before this present moment has prepared me for the inevitable shifts that lie ahead in the future. I am courageous enough to draw from my past. I’m brave enough to be in community. I’m also finally giving myself some credit. Nothing gets easier. I’m just getting stronger.

More than ever, I love who I am and who I choose to be. Still got lots of work to do. I’m just enjoying the ride a bit more. My beating heart is full. Bring on the next forty days and the next forty years. taken in Nationwide by @seecedgo

Fifteen fantastic years in Washington DC, and I know where the time (and my hair) went. Yes, I came to Washington for a job; but Washington is not just a company town. I built community, over and over. I finally developed boundaries, and worked to find balance. I played the long game; and I learned that while big goals may seem so far away, they can be achieved beyond our wildest dreams. Even when I wasn’t ready, I learned how to love and be loved. I leave with no regrets, only joy in that I can look back and be proud of the person into which I have grown.

Now, I’m no longer a capital city kid. Fifteen years in DC - not to mention seven previous years in Madison - is a very long time, particularly in politics. I am giving myself credit, space, and new opportunities to grow. I am finally taking time to deliberately rest and reset. A lot has changed in fifteen years; I can, too.

Tumultuous aptly describes the last twelve years. Twelve years ago, I joined The Leadership Conference (@civilrightsorg) in hopes of finding a position where my passion aligned with my profession. I wanted to be where campaigns to improve our lives are not just talked about, but are executed and won. Beyond my expectations, The Leadership Conference has been an incredible platform for promoting, protecting, and preserving civil rights. At the organization, I became a conduit for justice, for talent, and for progress. I’m incredibly lucky that it was my nine to five.

Earlier this spring, I completed my tenure at The Leadership Conference. Under great circumstances, I have departed for a fantastic new opportunity! I’ll share more soon. For now, I celebrate the communities across the country, our wins, and our successful tactics to hold decision makers accountable. We have lost a lot, but we also win a lot, too. Anyone who has won knows that it takes deep courage to withstand the possibility and the reality of loss.

Tumultuous aptly describes today, too. That hasn’t changed; but I have. I have become fearless, ready to take on both the new and ongoing challenges that hinder civil rights. Regardless of role, that will never change.

Embracing joy and allowing my cup to overfloweth, it has been the privilege of my life to be an active part of history.

I’m done shying away. I’m done running away. You wouldn’t know it, but a few parts of me still say to myself, “You? You get to lead? You get to be loud?” Well, I’m done with the second guessing, too.

I’m done with allowing the New York Times and the Washington Post to see more in me than I see in myself.

Only done I’m doing anymore is a job well done.
