The Foundation Studio is designed as a layered pedagogical framework to equip students with the skills and vocabulary necessary for the directed studios in the subsequent years. Conceived as a year-long program, the first semester focuses on building ways of seeing, thinking, and making. The second semester engages origins and principles of Space Making.
This year, the second semester began with a curated journey along the river Vaigai, beginning from its estuary and travelling up towards its source in the western ghats, experiencing ancient villages, temple towns and the archaeological site of Keezhadi.
The design studio was based in Madurai, as a conjectural temple city belonging to the 600 BCE.
The students were required to study excerpts from Sangam literature to develop character studies, and develop spatial responses as neighbourhoods emerged within the hypothetical city plan on the banks of Vaigai.

S4 Land-Building Studio: Batch 2024–2029

The fifth iteration of the Seed Land-Building Studio explored the highlands of Munnar, aiming to cultivate students' sensitivity to existing land conditions, communities, climate, and cultural contexts. The studio emphasized that every site selected for building is inseparable from the larger landscape to which it belongs.
To develop an understanding of observation and interpretation, students first engaged in exercises on reading, recording, and representing landscapes within the more familiar context of Muvattupuzha. These exercises encouraged them to recognize the subtle qualities and complexities embedded in everyday environments.
Through precedent studies and a series of iterative 3×3 relief models, students explored site selection and learned to design with varying topographies and slopes. Building on these investigations, they explored architectural interventions and programs that responded to the unique geographical and climatic characteristics of the region while addressing the needs of local communities, tea estate workers, and tourists.

Semester 6 focuses on material, detailing and building systems. The architectural design project is to detail out a block from the previous semester’s design for campus planning. Timber is chosen as the primary material, considering its renewability and preeminent place in Kerala’s built heritage and craftsmanship. Structural logic, assembly and detailing in wood are explored through alternating modules of model-making and working drawings in a rigorous back-and-forth process. A number of reviews from architects and engineers punctuate the semester. To gain a practical understanding of timber structures, study trips were undertaken to native examples of wooden structures as well as to chosen projects in Beypore, Mangalore, Gokarna and Goa. In the end, students compile a set of construction drawings in addition to making various scale models.

The SEED Academic Conclave: Monsoon '26

brought faculty together for two days of reflection, review, and dialogue as we looked back on the past semester and collectively try to shape the one ahead.

This year's conclave introduced a new format that encouraged richer academic exchange through proposer–respondent discussions and shared reflection.

We were privileged to host Dr. Jaideep Chatterjee ( @jaideep.chatterjee354 ) whose reflections on "building a school of architecture" sparked thoughtful conversations on academic culture and institution making.

Our academic reviewers Ar. Bijoy Ramachandran ( @hundredhandsblr ), and Ar. Biju Kuriakose ( @bijukuriakose ) whose provocations, and Dr. A. Srivathsan's ( @sri_vathsan_a )questions and critiques challenged us to think more deeply about architecture, pedagogy, and practice.

As we begin a new semester, we do so with renewed clarity, fresh perspectives, and a shared commitment to building meaningful architectural education. by @seed_kochi

We have great pleasure in welcoming Prof Czaee Malpani into our fold as the new Seed Foundation Studio lead @seed_foundationstudio

Czaee has spent the better part of the last decade deeply engaged with academic leadership and governance, with a keen and abiding commitment to institution-building which she now sees as its own form of practicing design. She has had the opportunity to work at young design schools, helping shape their direction as part of the founding faculty; and more importantly, establish and lead note-worthy Interior programmes such as at the Jindal School of Art and Architecture, OP Jindal Global University
and Indian Institute of Art and Design, New Delhi.
She has also taught at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and the University School of Architecture and Planning, GGSIP University, New Delhi.

She holds a dual graduate degree, having completed the Master of Science in Architecture and the Master of Architecture programmes simultaneously from
the prestigious College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati, OH, USA in 2011, for she received the Best Design Research award, and the Best Thesis award for each programme respectively.

Furthermore, she has close to 20 years of professional design experience, during which she has worked on various scales and types of projects such as residences, schools, hospitals, institutional buildings, retail stores, IT parks, and aviation infrastructure, amongst others.

We wish her the very best in this new assignment! by @seed_kochi
