Among the mighty redwoods of Northern California, where the fog rolled through the mountains and the roar of Saturday nights echoed beneath the towering trees, stood a place unlike any other.

The Redwood Bowl. Home of the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.

Far from the bright lights and grand stadiums of college football, we came from different places, carrying different dreams. But the forest became our home, and the men beside us became our brothers.

Our story wasn’t written in glory. It was forged through adversity, sacrifice, uncertainty, and an unwavering belief in something bigger than ourselves.

When Coach Rob Smith arrived, a new era began. The program was being rebuilt, and not everyone was meant to be part of that journey. Those who remained understood the commitment.

Two feet in.

We weren’t born champions. We were built in the dungeon locker room, through early morning workouts, mat drills, endless gassers, and countless hours when nobody was watching.

And when we thought we had nothing left to give, there was always one more.

’Cause champions do one more.

Through the struggles, the injuries, the sacrifices, and the battles fought together, a brotherhood was forged.

“Why not us? Why not tonight?”

And somewhere along the way, that brotherhood became a championship team.

From a winless conference season to 9–1 and conference champions, we carved our names into Humboldt State history.

Now, that journey takes its place in the Humboldt State Athletic Hall of Fame.

And just like that, it’s September 29th.

September used to be my month. I used to look forward to it every year. Drinks, parties, friends, everyone getting together to celebrate me. September was about my birthday, my plans, my fun.

Then you came along, son.

And now September means something completely different. Now it’s all about you. And somehow, I don’t miss it being about me at all.

You changed my life. For the better.

Being a dad isn’t hard. It’s challenging. It tests your will and your resolve. It asks you, can you keep going when you’re tired? Can you find a little more when you feel like you’ve got nothing left?

It’s teething and sleepless nights. It’s changing diapers with one eye open, trying to function on almost no sleep. It’s pacing the room, soothing you, and wondering how you’re going to make it through the night.

But then I look down and see your little eyes looking back at me, and somehow, everything feels worth it.

That’s the cool thing about dad strength: somehow, you do. You keep going. You find more because your son is depending on you.

And in just one year, you’ve already come so far yourself. I can already see your own resolve and determination starting to show. When you want something, you don’t stop until you get it. You keep trying. You keep figuring it out. Sometimes it drives your mom and me crazy, but secretly, I love that about you.

Because I hope you never lose that.

My life has changed a lot this past year. My priorities are different. I’m more focused. Things that used to seem important just don’t carry the same weight anymore.

And I wouldn’t change any of it.

4 Minutes of Fury. 🥇

Scotty’s been training for almost 10 years, on and off, but mostly off 😂. Family man, full-time job, and plenty of responsibilities outside the gym.

My job as his coach wasn’t to turn him into something he’s not. It was to build a game plan around his strengths while being honest about his weaknesses. The biggest ones: wrestling and cardio.

A lot of coaches would try to force the wrestling. We went the opposite direction. We focused on counter wrestling, finding opportunities to pull guard, and getting the fight to the mat with the path of least resistance.

Scotty has a great guard, so the motto was simple:

Pull guard. Sweep. Get on top.

That was the game plan I drilled into him throughout camp.

When it was time to compete, he executed. Shutout victory and a kimura. Proud of the way he performed and even more proud that he trusted the game plan.

And it definitely helps when Baby Ceej is in your corner.
