Wintering ❄️
~ A New Year Retreat for Rest, Reflection & Renewal

January 15–17, 2027 · Xenia Retreat Centre, Bowen Island

I get to return to Xenia. 🤍

Over the years, I’ve held some of my most beautiful retreats on this land, and coming back feels like a true homecoming to a place steeped in ceremony.

This January, instead of rushing into the new year with big visions, we’re going to winter. For one weekend we’ll go deeper into the season itself, into the themes, symbols and metaphors winter holds, and let them invite us to slow down.

Together we’ll:

❄️ Practise radical rest
❄️ Reflect on the year gone by
❄️ Take an optional wild ocean swim, followed by a warm sauna
❄️ Move through a Kundalini yoga class
❄️ Connect with ourselves, with each other, and with the land that holds us

The wonderful @paprikamarika will be cooking for us all weekend, nourishing us with delicious vegetarian food made from local ingredients. 🌿

The intuitive @kimlockhartphotography will be with us too, capturing you as you step into this new year. Each participant will be gifted a portrait. 📷

On our final day, we’ll each invite one word to guide us into the year ahead. It becomes something to hold onto, a quiet compass that steers you toward what you truly need, carrying the memory and belonging of a weekend spent with women drawn to winter’s energy.

Spaces are limited and filling quickly.

Thankful Pumpkins 🎃

We wove some ritual into our Friendsgiving this year! Each family got one and wrote all the things they are grateful for 🥰 It was so cute hearing the kids share everything out loud!

New traditions and opportunities for reflection and connection = my kind of thanksgiving! 🍁 by @seekingceremony

This week the stress had been building. So much going on, and I could barely catch my breath.

Then I remembered that in our six-week Elements of Ritual training, this is the week we explore AIR 🌬️

Air is the element I find hardest to connect with. Water and fire are my go-tos. I can find my way into earth through the ground beneath my feet. But air is trickier. It’s intangible, often invisible.

Today, sitting at my desk with pressure in my chest, tension in my head and my shoulders slumped, I looked outside and saw the wind.

So I paused my giant to-do list and stepped outside to notice it. It’s a beautiful fall day here. I looked up and watched the leaves dance, fall and get blown around, and I felt my body soften.

🌬️
I breathed in what I wanted to hold on to.
I breathed out what I wanted to let go of.

Thirty seconds. A small ritual pause. And I came back inside feeling energized and renewed.

What a gift it is to build our ceremonial muscles, so we notice these small openings for ritual practice in ordinary days. 🍂

Elements of Ritual begins again this spring. If you’d like to explore how earth, water, fire and air can support your own ritual practice, join us. Link in bio.

What’s one thing you’d breathe out today?

A call for CouRAGE. 🔥🌊

This morning we experienced what happens when community holds rage together. When we take our personal anger and turn it into our collective rage.

🌅 We met before dawn, in the dark. We lit candles and shared what we were carrying. We cried. We laughed. We felt the anger in us stir.

Then we wrote it all down: our fear, our frustration, the things that make us feel unsafe as women. We wrote them on discarded pottery, read them aloud to one another, and then took giant rocks and smashed them to pieces. 💥

And as the sun rose, we swam. We felt the cold water, the warmth from the sun, and the reminder that we are not alone.

Together we are stronger. Our rage is not something to swallow, but something to alchemize into power, into purpose, into change.

We left feeling activated. This is what it looks like to rise up together.

RAGE SWIM 🌊🔥

There’s so much rising in me lately: grief, anger, frustration, rage. The more I read, the more it builds, and I know I’m not the only one carrying it.

So I put out a call to our swim group: “We need a rage swim. Who’s with me?!”

This Saturday morning, we’ll swim with the rising sun in the sea. We’ll scream and smash and storm. We’ll be in community, feeling everything we need to feel right now.

We’re turning private fury into collective fire. 🔥

As we rise up. 🌅

Come as you are. Bring your rage. We’ll hold it together.

DM to join. Swim is in North Vancouver 🇨🇦

It’s been a grief-filled week.

My body needed to be held by the sea. My tears needed to mix with the salt water. My heart needed to be painted with the colours of the sunset.

Almost two years ago, we said goodbye to Kona 🐶

During her end of life ceremony, we named what we were grateful for, and we spoke aloud what we wanted to carry forward in her memory.

Each of us had chosen a white rose. As the vet carried her away, we tucked one in beside her. The rest my girls dried and kept on their dressers, where they’ve sat for almost two years.

This week, my daughter was cleaning her room saw the dried roses. They’d gone brittle and faded, and she didn’t want them in her space anymore…but she couldn’t just throw them out either.

On her own, with no one watching, she pulled the petals apart and laid them on the ground in the shape of a K.

I found her there by accident. She wasn’t performing for anyone. She was just tending to her grief.

This is the thing about ritual ~ it doesn’t have to be big, or planned, or witnessed. Sometimes it’s a girl and some old rose petals, quietly making something beautiful 🌹

Grief doesn’t end when the ceremony does. It just keeps finding small, sacred ways to move through us ~ if we let it.

The season rarely turns on the date a calendar says it will.

Chronos time draws a hard line. The equinox itself moves in something slower ~ the small, often invisible accumulation of change.

Right now, I’m noticing the objects that hold both energies at once. The things that are still summer and already fall. The quiet thresholds we cross without quite realizing we’ve crossed them.

This is the kind of attention we’re practicing together this year ~ noticing the in-between, and letting that noticing become ritual. Not forcing a shift, but honouring the one already underway.

Next week is our sixth gathering in A Year of Seasonal Ceremony 🍂 Fall Equinox. What a gift it has been to move through this wheel in community.

2027 registration is now open, if you’d like to join us for the next turn of the year. Link in bio. ❄️ 🌸 ☀️ 🍁 by @seekingceremony

On our last morning in Orvieto, we built a nature mandala to say thank you for our trip to this magical place. It included:

🌻 Sunflowers from the side of the road on a drive in the country (my dad pulled over and I jumped over bramble to get some!)

🌸 Roses we picked and had on our table all week

🫒 Six olives from the orchard, one for each of us.

My parents have been coming to this part of Umbria for twenty-five years. My parents aren’t sure if they’ll come back…so this time, the ritual we do at the end of every trip held something heavier.

We stood in a circle and shared one thing we were grateful for ~ or a favourite memory from the week. Then we threw the petals into the sky, the Duomo behind us as the sun sat on our last evening.

It’s incredibly important to me that we take the time to close each trip we take. The kids love it and my parents did too!

If you’d like a free guide to creating your own departure ritual, comment RITUAL and I’ll send you a link to build your own “farewell to a place you’ve visited” ritual, inspired by my stories and experiences 💞 by @seekingceremony

Today’s ritual arrived on a plate. 🍄🇮🇹

At a small restaurant in the Umbrian countryside, the chef walked out to our table to tell us about the ovolo 🥚 mushroom (Amanita caesarea) before we’d even ordered it.

He said the dish was one of the best he’d ever made! Then he showed us the mushrooms, still holding the soil they came from, before disappearing back into the kitchen to prepare them simply: thinly sliced, raw, with lemon, olive oil, and Parmesan.

What I keep noticing in Italy is how ritual isn’t something separate from daily life ~ it’s woven into the order of a meal, the time spent at the table, and knowing where your food comes from. There’s reverence built into the pacing of a meal and a story attached to every ingredient.

I talk a lot about creating ritual with intention. Today, ritual found us in the shape of a mushroom, and a chef who wanted us to understand it before we tasted it. 🍄‍🟫

Mille Grazie @sevenrestaurantcafe for this gift. Apparently we can learn more about their mushroom hunting expeditions on the BBC too!

Wendell Berry died yesterday, at 92, on the same land his family farmed for seven generations.

I keep returning to “The Peace of Wild Things”. He wrote about despair waking him in the night, and about letting the world’s indifference to his grief become a kind of grace.

He describes a ritual ~ a body moving toward stillness on purpose, because grief is too heavy to carry alone.

I think about this often in my work ~ how presence isn’t something we arrive at by trying harder to feel better. It’s something we walk toward ~ a river, a heron, a patch of sky.

Today, in his honour, let something wild carry what you can’t.

Last night, I convened a mastectomy ceremony 🍒

I invited everyone to write down what they were angry about, what pissed them off, what was lingering just beneath the sadness.

We wrote out those words on broken or discarded pottery donated by @steeleceramics and then we SMASHED it 💥

One by one, we shared the anger and then threw the plates and cups into a bucket, then pulverized them with a hammer!

It was sensational ~ we tapped into a collective energy and emotional capacity that needed to emerge. The ceremony created the space for that to take place.

We did other rituals too, of course, but tapping into our collective rage may just be my favourite thing ever.

Feel it. Write it. Smash it.
