Okay, one more shot of Tribute In Light, taken from the new rooftop deck of the renovated @pioneerworks (and future site of the PW observatory — it’s the only kunsthalle I know of with a side hustle in astronomy) — on one of the clearest nights I’ve ever seen this time of year, so you can really see the epic, sci-fi movie-esque extent of the beams’ reach. 🩷💔 by @seencapone

NYC SCENE REPORT: The art season kicked off last night with dozens and dozens of shows in Tribeca and Downtown — not too much to show here since the crowds were intense and I was zipping around a lot 🚲 and the humidity was like 125% — but will shout out to the excellent @alannah.farrell.studio (who never disappoints) at @anatebgigallery (slides 1-2) and to the great selection of paintings by artist Paulina Peavy in a group show of mystic/visionary women artists @andrewedlingallery (slides 3-8)

Also it’s time for my annual pix of Tribute In Light, one of the greatest public art monuments of all time, but instead of the usual scenic shits of the cityscape viewed from the Brooklyn waterfront, I rode down to the Lower Manhattan site of the installation (actually atop the Battery Parking Garage several blocks south of the former WTC/Freedom Plaza site) and got some great shots looking straight up its ass — and then on the way home a firetruck was hosing down a fire on the Brooklyn Bridge, which was a new experience.

A couple more clips from “Four Figures (A Sculpture, Counting..)”, shown here as a projection test. Ideally the piece would just run on a loop forever somewhere out of the way, like in the dead space under a stairwell or something, so these characters would appear to be stuck in a maddening endurance performance, but not attract too much attention. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about Bill Viola’s tableau vivants, Bruce Nauman’s irritating clown torture videos and contrapposto studies , or even the repetitious musical performances of Ragnar Kjartansson. Not that I’m putting myself on their level. More like their work must have subconsciously taught me the grammar. Because I never thought I’d ever want to make work like that, until it was the only thing that made sense for me to do. And by the time I was already neck deep in production on it, I remembered the work of these other guys. Honestly I never really liked Bruce Nauman’s work at all except maybe on an academic level. Funny how that stuff worms its way in, and you realize you’re making the kind of art you never thought you’d make. by @seencapone

FOUR FIGURES (A Sculpture, Counting…) is a digitally animated performance video presented as a looping projection installation, in two parts.
.
The first part is a single-shot staged tableau, with set elements inspired by classic art motifs of the vanitas: a skull, an hourglass pedestal, a cross, and shifting lights and shadows that evoke the rapid passage of time. The characters strike sculptural poses but can’t quite be still or stay quiet for very long.
In the second part, the theatrical elements are removed to focus on each character’s unique movements, using split screen and multiple filmic camera angles, so more like a modern dance film.
.
This clip shows the same moments from both parts one after another for comparison.
.
Using motion capture, I solely performed the movements and lip-sync facial acting for all the characters (along with extensive keyframe animation). I also composed the music and speech using generative AI, digital instrumentation and audio mixing. So on top of all that other stuff, one might say, it’s also a pantomime/puppet play.

FOUR FIGURES (A Sculpture, Counting…) is a motion-captured 3D-animated endurance-performance tableau-vivant staged as a video-projected dance film. Feel free to swap any of those terms interchangeably with each other.

In this animation, a male and female character perform repetitive gestures and actions while reciting a seemingly nonlinear countdown. A third character, covered head-to-toe in hot yellow body paint, moves through a variety of art-inspired contrapposto poses in the Classical style of a muscular nude male sculpture. The fourth figure appears only as a large bust on a plinth, pulling funny faces and shouting a few lines before relapsing into his default petrified state.
