📅 Mark your calendars. This October, we're meeting in the middle.

As experience designers, we've always worked there. Between vision and need. Between story and data. Between what exists and what could be.

That's the idea behind Meet Me in the Middle, the theme for the 2026 SEGD Conference Experience in Kansas City.

From October 22–24, experience designers, wayfinding specialists, brand strategists, makers, and placemakers will gather in the geographic heart of the country to explore the tensions that define our work—and the opportunities that emerge when we embrace them. Through sessions, tours, and conversations organized around four pillars of "the middle," we'll examine how design bridges divides, builds belonging, and creates meaning.

📍Geographic Middle: a true center of gravity, where routes converge and ideas travel through. Not fly-over country, but a place that's earned its design legacy across sports architecture, museums, transit, and brand identity.

🤝Collaborative Middle: between budget and vision, between what's commissioned and what's actually needed. This is where great experience design happens: holding the tension and finding the third option nobody saw coming.

🌉Social Middle: urban and rural, familiar and foreign, us and them. These fractures live in the spaces we design every day. Design won't erase that tension, but it can build something that bridges it.

❤️Emotional Middle: craft that knows not just how to make something, but why it matters. This conference is part professional development and part homecoming for the designers who want their work to feel seen and connected to something bigger.

Meet Me in the Middle at the 2026 SEGD Conference Experience Kansas City, October 22- 24.

Registration is open—register by August 31 for early rates!

The middle gets a bad reputation.

But as designers of experiences, we’ve always known something critical: the middle is not a compromise. The middle is where meaning is made.

The most meaningful work doesn’t happen at the extremes. It’s where ideas converge. Where client vision meets user need. Where culture meets place. Where technology meets humanity. Where competing priorities sharpen our thinking—and where creativity emerges when we resist easy answers.

That’s why this year’s SEGD Conference Experience theme is Meet Me in the Middle.

This October 22–24, we’re gathering in Kansas City—not just because it’s the geographic heart of the country, but because it embodies convergence. It’s a place where craft meets innovation, history meets reinvention, and local stories create global impact.

Together, we’ll explore how experiential design helps us navigate complexity, embrace productive tension, and create meaningful connections through inspiring speakers, immersive tours, hands-on workshops, NEXPO, and the conversations that only happen when this community comes together.

We’re honored to have this year’s conference guided by an extraordinary leadership team:

• Rick Smith, Vice President of Experiential Design, Dimensional Innovations
• Wendy Manning, Managing Principal, Demeter Strategy Design
• Jackie Berra, Founder & Brand Experience Director, JBerra Consulting & Design

Along with the support of Kansas City Chapter Chairs Kate Schmidt and Sarah Onken.

A special thank you to our brand design partner, Studio Loutsis (@studio_loutsis) for bringing this year’s theme to life, and to our Presenting Sponsors, Color-Ad, Inc. (@color_ad_inc) and Nanolumens (@nanolumens_led), for helping make this experience possible.

This is where our profession comes together to challenge one another, sharpen our thinking, and imagine what’s next.

Early registration is now open. Lock in the best rate, reserve your hotel, and start planning your trip to Kansas City. We’ll see you in October!!

The SEGD Global Design Awards Celebration follows in the Barney Allis Historic Lobby, bringing winners and jurors together with the wider SEGD community to toast the teams behind the work.

Creative work has an inner side that rarely makes it into a project brief, yet it shapes the ideas we pursue and the way we lead a team.

On Day 1 of the SEGD Conference, Amy Lukas (@amylukas), Founder of Fallow Renewal (@fallowrenewal) and Executive Depth Coach for Creative Leadership, leads an interactive onsite workshop: The Inner Life of a Creative: Navigating the Critic and Reclaiming Your Creative Voice.

Amy introduces her Creative Archetypes framework, a way of recognizing the different parts of ourselves that appear whenever we create. Through guided reflection and conversation, participants will explore the patterns that may be holding them back and discover ways to move beyond their inner critic.

New this year, this Thursday afternoon workshop offers an on-site alternative for conference attendees who choose to stay at NEXPO rather than head out on Kansas City's project and experience tours. It's a chance to step away from the demands of the work, focus on the person behind it, and reconnect with what makes you creative in the first place.

Most of the experiences we install are built to stay put, while the people who use them, the technology behind them, and the languages and content around them keep moving. That gap is where Maris Ensing, Founder and Chief Architect of Mad Systems (@madsystems), and Moderator Abigail Honor (@amhonor) of Lorem Ipsum Corp (@loremipsumcorp), focus their NEXPO talk, Creating Human Experience that can evolve with AI.

Maris proposes shifting the starting point of experience design from fixed outputs to human intent and outcomes. He’ll look at how multilingual, accessible information and adaptable content and technology can let an experience grow over time while staying true to the reason it was created.

AI opens up new possibilities along the way, but Maris treats it as a tool rather than the goal. The bigger challenge he takes on is building environments that can respond to changing people and needs while keeping authorship and curatorial intent intact, along with privacy and accessibility.

This NEXPO talk looks at how to build experiences that keep serving people long after opening day, and you won’t want to miss it.

Thank you to our Presenting Sponsors, Color-Ad, Inc. (@color_ad_inc) and Nanolumens (@nanolumens_led), for making this conference possible.

Screens have become the go-to answer for bringing media into physical spaces, but newer options are opening up another way. This NEXPO talk, presented by Peregrine OKB (@peregrine_okb), looks at what comes next.

In Make the Technology Disappear: Moving Beyond “Put a Screen on It”, P. Michael Anderson, Principal Architect, Connected Experiences at Forte (@fortedigital), and Tristan Valencia (@_tristan_valencia_), Founder and Principal of Thought Process, explore digital media that behaves like part of the architecture instead of something mounted onto it.

New materials and architectural finishes, along with integrated displays and emerging technologies, are giving digital content a way to live in the surfaces and spaces around us. Michael and Tristan look at how technology and architecture can serve the story together, so the technology recedes and the experience takes center stage.

During the conference’s NEXPO Talks, SEGD CEO Cybelle Jones (@cybelle_jones_designjoy) sits down with Kelly Kolar (@kolar_kelly), President and Founder of Kolar Design (@kolardesign), for What the Data Tells Us: Inside the 2026 SEGD Employment + Salary Report.

The upcoming released report offers the latest picture of the experiential design profession, and Cybelle and Kelly will dig into the key trends behind it. They’ll look at what the findings reveal about pay and employment as the field changes, and how those trends show up in Kelly’s own practice and research.

The conversation wraps with an open Q&A, so come with your own questions and your own read on what you’re seeing across the industry.

New technology is already finding its way into signage programs, and Lauren Kelly, CTO of Wayfindit and Mustard Square (@mustardsquare), wants to know where it can actually help.

In her NEXPO talk, sponsored by Modulex (@modulexgroup), Signs of Things to Come: Experiments at the Edge of Wayfinding, Lauren looks ahead to the next decade of wayfinding. She’ll examine emerging tools that could change how signage is created, from early planning and design through translation and ongoing maintenance.

Expect a practical look at what’s being tested right now and what it could mean for the profession, as expectations around how information is made and delivered continue to shift.

📍 We can’t wait to see you in Kansas City, October 22-24.

Experience design does its most important work in the middle, where different fields, clients, neighborhoods, and viewpoints all pull in their own direction. So how do we ready the next generation of designers for a profession where handling that complexity counts for as much as craft?

That challenge is the focus of The Space Between: Preparing the Next Generation of Experience Designers, a panel featuring Joell Angel-Chumbley (@joellangelchumbley), Lisa Maione (@berriesforeveryone), Jeremy Shellhorn (@jeremyshellhorn), Neeta Verma (@neeta.verma.31), and Amy Rees (@amyarees). These local and national educators will dig into what happens when the classroom meets the real world, from working across disciplines and engaging communities to getting comfortable with ambiguity, keeping pace with new technology, and meeting a profession whose expectations keep shifting.

At the center of the conversation is whether students are learning only how to make things, or also how to navigate the relationships that give design its purpose.

If you hire, mentor, or teach emerging designers, this is a session for you!
