High on a mountain
the sun could no longer reach,
an ancient beautiful tree
took its last shudder
and fell

Its echo carried
through the whole mountain

It left three leaves scattered on the ground,
wondering
were they too heavy?
What could they have done differently?
It wasn’t her time

The sunflowers,
who know the grief of shadows,
huddle around them
and show them
where the light still filters through

Far below,
in the town church,
the bells rang.

At the bottom of the mountain,
a boy takes his first sip of champagne
to celebrate his transition
from boyhood to almost man

He looks up the mountain
and sees his father,
halfway up,
glass raised,
ready to show him the way

Their glasses clink

And the bells rang.

A baby sleeps through her baptism,
head cooled happily
from the beating sun
The mass claps

And the bells rang.

Greasy fingers,
sugar on lips,
beans slipping through fingers,
a family gathered—
cooking, laughing
Hitting hands on tables

And from the balcony,

the bells rang.

Far, far below,
from an old nonno’s idea,
from soil cooked for centuries,
a new fruit flourishes
something never grown there before
among the sweating feet
of the men below

a goats wattle clangs

The farmer looks up, he cannot hear the bells.
Perhaps they have finally stopped ringing now
Or maybe he’s just too far away by @seggarz
