The Pennsylvania House just passed The Family Care Act (HB 200) which would allow eligible employees in Pennsylvania access to 12 weeks of paid leave following the birth of a child or serious illness.

Millions of Pennsylvanians, including tens of thousands of healthcare workers — a profession of almost 90% women — still lack real access to paid or protected family leave.

Legislating paid leave not only supports this important workforce's ability to show up and serve their community every day, but we believe it will have a real impact on the health and well-being of families across the Commonwealth.

We applaud the house for their efforts and urge the senate to follow their lead and work together across parties to make paid parental leave a reality for every family in PA.

Theresa Brown is a 10 year breast cancer survivor who was treated at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh.

As a nurse herself, she recognized her nurses as wanting to provide her the best possible care but being stretched thin in an already broken system.

On July 21, Magee moms and patients gathered in Oakland to call on UPMC to work with nurses to implement evidence-based staffing at the largest women’s and birthing hospital in Pittsburgh.

In addition to those who shared their story Tuesday, dozens of patients have signed on to a letter calling on UPMC to respond with urgency to nurses’ outstanding staffing proposals, as well as asking UPMC for patients to join an upcoming negotiations to share their stories directly with corporate stakeholders about why these standards matter.

"I feel the need to write in support of the workers at Mount Nittany Medical Center who are being forced to strike.

This past June, I was taken to the ER and had to stay for over two weeks with a very serious condition. My lungs were filled with blood. I underwent surgery and had to be intubated. My heart stopped.

Doctors were calling orders, but it was a CNA who jumped in to give me CPR and bring me back to life. She saved me.

Yes, there are angels among us. She is one.

I have been to this hospital so much these past years. As a Desert Storm veteran, the way the staff treat me makes all the difference in the world. The cleaning staff, nurses, CNAs, and kitchen staff all take time to check on me.

They are the hospital. The compassionate staff are the reason why we all choose Mount Nittany.

Altoona is just as close to me. My daughter works in a different hospital. But those hospitals don’t have the wonderful nurses and staff you find at Mount Nittany. I won’t go anywhere else.

Mount Nittany: Step up and take care of your people the way your people take care of patients like me. Without them, the hospital wouldn’t have business. The hospital would not have been able to build this new big wing."

🚨🚨🚨CALL @mountnittanyhealth Health execs at 814-231-3153 and tell them to invest in ALL workers for quality care! The frontline workers at Mount Nittany are taking a stand for quality care and good jobs for their entire community. Workers are really struggling with the rising cost of filling up their tank, keeping a roof over their heads and putting food on the table for their children. While workers have been struggling, Mount Nittany executives made over $183 MILLION in profits last fiscal year. Now, executives aren’t even offering raises that keep up with the cost of inflation. So workers have made the difficult decision to strike for five days starting July 27 to advocate for their patients and protest unfair labor practices.

The support from patients and community members means everything to us ♥

"I’ve been watching the news about what’s going on at Mount Nittany Medical Center with a lot of concern and anger.

For people like me, this is not just about a fair contract for the employees. This is also about the future of a hospital that we have entrusted to care for generations of our most loved people.

This is where we took my husband when he had a heart attack in December. This is where my mother-in-law received cancer treatment.

And this is where my father, an above and below ground miner for 32 years, finally accepted treatment for his black lung after years of refusing.

See, my father refused to go to the doctor his whole life. But when I brought him to Mount Nittany because he couldn’t breathe, the team of doctors, nurses and staff changed his mind.

The staff at Mount Nittany don’t treat you like you’re just a number. They get to know you. They care.

My father trusted and loved the staff. He had his favorite nurses.

My whole family worked the coal mines because it used to be the only job in Central Pennsylvania that you could raise a family on without a degree. But when my dad retired, he didn’t end up on the bottle he thought he would – an oxygen bottle.

After all he went through, the staff at Mount Nittany who made the end of his journey comfortable means everything to me. They allowed my family to have more time with him.

So it makes me upset to hear that Mount Nittany is not valuing their staff. The hospital should pay for the talent and compassion that all of these employees put into Mount Nittany.

These workers are the ones there for us when a loved one is in a car accident or you come into the ER scared about symptoms.

They are the reason why Mount Nittany is seeing money and patients come in.

There is no bright future for the hospital without the bright workers who make the difference.

I want the workers at Mount Nittany to know that you have the complete support of all the people across counties who come to the hospital for your care. Keep fighting for us and for what you deserve too."
