✨ Weekend in Champagne

Just 4 hours by car from Frankfurt — and suddenly you’re surrounded by vineyards, sipping champagne at Phare de Verzenay.

An evening walk through Reims, admiring its stunning cathedral, followed by a cozy French dinner.

The next morning starts in the historic UNESCO cellars of Pommery, exploring the underground world of champagne and, of course, tasting along the way.

Then on to Épernay — strolling down the famous Avenue de Champagne, stopping by legendary maisons and enjoying some of the finest champagne in the world.

How do you open a wax-sealed wine bottle?
Simple: you ignore the wax 😄

Don’t cut it. Don’t peel it.
Just push the corkscrew straight through the wax into the cork and open the bottle normally.

The wax will break on its own — and you’ll save time and nerves 🥂✨

This 2019 Cisterna Fuori Etna Rosso Ciro Biondi @cirobion found an unexpected partner in roasted bone marrow.

Bright acidity, delicate tannins, sour cherry, dried rose, redcurrant, hints of damp forest floor and volcanic minerality cut through the richness of the marrow beautifully, while gremolata and toasted sourdough kept every bite fresh.

Etna Rosso has a remarkable way of combining elegance with wildness. It isn’t about power—it’s about energy, tension and a sense of place. Wines from Etna always seem to carry a little bit of the volcano with them.

What would be your unexpected pairing with Etna Rosso?

What should you drink in Cinque Terre?

If you only try one local drink in Cinque Terre, make it the wine.

These vineyards are a perfect example of heroic viticulture. Imagine vines growing on impossibly steep cliffs overlooking the sea, where almost everything is done by hand because machines simply can’t reach the terraces. Every bottle represents hours of hard work, centuries of tradition, and a deep love for this landscape.

Start with Cinque Terre DOC, a fresh, mineral white wine made mainly from three local grape varieties: Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino. Thanks to the sea breeze and rocky soils, it has crisp acidity, citrus notes, and a salty minerality that pairs perfectly with seafood.

If you see Sciacchetrà, don’t miss the chance to try it. It’s the region’s legendary sweet passito wine, made from the same grapes after they’re dried for weeks. Rich, golden, and incredibly aromatic, it’s one of Italy’s true hidden gems.

But here’s our favorite Cinque Terre ritual.

Skip the restaurant.

Walk into a tiny village wine shop, buy a bottle of local white, ask for a couple of glasses (they’ll usually have them), grab a cone of cuoppo fritto on the way, head down to the harbor, and watch the sun slowly disappear into the Ligurian Sea.

Sometimes the best wine tasting doesn’t happen in a vineyard.

It happens on a dock, with salty air, the sound of the waves, and nowhere else you need to be. taken in Cinque Terre, Italia by @sektrocknroll

One of the best ways to understand a Champagne house is simply to walk through it.

A self-guided visit to Pommery in Reims offers exactly that: the freedom to explore the historic chalk cellars, learn about the House’s history, and see how heritage and contemporary art coexist beneath the city.

The kilometres of underground galleries are as much a part of Champagne as the wine itself, providing the naturally cool conditions that have been used for ageing bottles for generations.

A visit like this adds context to every glass. Behind every bottle is not only a winemaking process, but also a place with its own history, architecture, and identity.

✨ Some evenings don’t need much—just good food, a beautiful bottle, and time to slow down.

🍾 Tonight’s choice was 1215 Blanc et Noirs Brut by Weingut Andres @weingut.andres — a traditional method sparkling wine from the Pfalz, made from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir and aged 18 months on the lees. That time on the yeast gives it beautiful notes of brioche and toasted almonds, layered with crisp apple, citrus zest and delicate red berries. The mousse is fine and creamy, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything fresh and incredibly drinkable.

🍽️ Paired with oven-roasted salmon loin, zucchini and mushrooms, it felt effortless. The wine’s freshness lifted the richness of the salmon, while its subtle pastry notes echoed the earthy mushrooms. Nothing was overpowering—just balance in every bite and every sip.

🥂 Sometimes that’s all you need: good food, a beautiful bottle, and an evening that asks nothing from you except to slow down.

🌸 Miraval Rosé 2024

A quintessential Provence rosé with remarkable finesse. Pale salmon in color, it opens with delicate aromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, wild strawberries and delicate white blossoms. On the palate, it is fresh and vibrant, offering bright citrus, juicy stone fruit, refined minerality and a long, elegant finish. Crisp, balanced and effortlessly Mediterranean.

Food pairing 🍝🐟

Paired with pasta in a rich bisque sauce and monkfish, Miraval Rosé 2024 is a natural match. Its lively acidity beautifully balances the creamy bisque, while the wine’s delicate fruit and mineral character enhance the sweetness of the shellfish and the firm, meaty texture of the monkfish. The result is a harmonious pairing where neither the wine nor the dish overwhelms the other.
