It’s finally here. In 2024 I learned what an ultramarathon was. I had no idea anyone ran anything over a marathon let alone a 100 mile distance. I showed up to Big Bear to crew my cousin @blaketbender @ironmilesco at the @kodiak_ultramarathons and left that race so inspired. A year later, in 2025, I came back to pace and document his race. Same distance, new goals. He wanted to finish in under 24 hours, knocking nearly five hours off his previous finish time. I met him in the middle of the mountains shortly before midnight with a headlamp, survival blanket, and some gels. We headed out into the night and within a few miles everything went sideways. This is the story of setting big goals, chasing them, and finding meaning in a new outcome. Follow the link in bio to watch our doc… Love you cuz.

Some behind the scenes moments from filming the latest #LT100RUN documentary this summer.

Leadville: Road to Redemption has already surpassed our views on the previous ultra doc and I’m just so relieved. I’m also happy, but you learn not to put too much emotion into into a single project. I make what I make and I hope it lands with others, but sometimes it doesn’t and that can absolutely crush you.

I have a pretty high standard and it can be tough just to say this is good enough and call it finished. All the phone calls, texts, DM’s, driveway chats with my neighbors (yes) and general feedback we’ve had the last three days since we hit publish have been super encouraging.

The biggest thing standing in my way has always been perfection. Once I let that go and started actually making movies with the tools I had in the time I had with literally no money, I started gaining traction.

Thanks everyone for your support along the way. My goal is always to make movies I’d want to watch: fast, fun, a little dramatic, and definitely some tears by the end. Hope you enjoy, more to come 🫶🏻 by @selectstudioco

Here’s where our journey started.

As a documentary filmmaker, I’m always looking for a good story. When @ironmilesco told me he was running a hundred miles, I had so many questions. And that’s how I knew this was interesting. How many other people have never heard of this? How many were also wondering how he sleeps, eats… Takes a sh*t in the middle of the woods?!

Problem was I hadn’t picked up a camera in some time. I had been working professionally as an editor and producer, so I was cutting other people’s footage and directing DP’s on set. Making my own movies again really intimidated me.

But I’m so glad I did it anyway.

This was some of my original footage from that 2024 @kodiak_ultramarathons race. I used an outdated Sony a6000 with kit lense and my iPhone to make a mini series. The next year, I showed up ready to film and that experience turned into our first documentary, CHASING SUB 24. And this year? We went to @leadvilleraceseries with a three cameras, pro audio, and a drone.

The next doc is on its way, this Friday 10/9 @4pm Pacific. taken in Big Bear Lake, California by @selectstudioco

Not all races are created equal.

Leadville historically has one of the highest DNF rates of any 100 miler. Tough cutoffs, high altitude, and immense pressure.

Not only is it hard to run, it’s just as hard to even get a Bib. Failure could result in years before you get a shot at redemption.

Success looks different for everyone. Toeing the start line was already a win. My other goal was to finish.

But that’s the thing about Leadville, there’s getting a finishing buckle, and then there’s finishing under 25 hours and getting the BIG BUCKLE…

The Road to Redemption airs Friday.

The documentary process is always a wild ride. We went to Leadville wondering what would challenge @ironmilesco most in the latest 100 mile race: would it be the altitude, the calories he needed to consume, the strict 30 hour cutoff? Turns out, it was something none of us could have predicted.

Half way through the race, after two brutal ascents of Hope Pass, Blake thought the hardest part was behind him. And it was, in a physical sense. But mentally, a new challenge emerged.

A clip of Blake talking to his crew at the Twin Lakes aid station had gone viral: 72k views and climbing. And in the comments section, a heated debate was stirring. Was he a level headed athlete clearly communicating his needs to the crew? Or a self absorbed midpacker who should shut his mouth and just be grateful for the help?

A month later, and the 20 second clip is approaching nearly half a million views. For a profile with less than 500 followers at the time of posting, this was (and still is) complete madness.

But as we’ve learned over the years, these ultramarathons are always about so much more than the miles out on the trail or a single moment in time. They’re about the hope of finishing, the fear of failure, and the people you bring along for the ride. Blake and his crew will tell the full story in our latest documentary, Leadville 100: Road to Redemption.

Premieres this Friday 10/9 @ 4pm Pacific

Introducing @ironmilesco the subject of our upcoming #LT100Run documentary.

Blake began on the road and quickly fell in love with the trail, signing up for his first 100 before he’d even finished a marathon.

@leadvilleraceseries marks his fourth 100 mile attempt, with two previous finishes and one previous DNF at the distance. Blake went to the start line ready to face the close to 50/50 odds of a DNF, prepared for the challenges not only of distance but also of high elevation.

The race begins at 4am in the small town of Leadville, Colorado with a start line at 10,000 feet and mid-race climbs taking runners above 12,000 feet. But that wasn’t the only change he faced that day.
