In Guatemala, more than 90% of businesses are micro, small, or medium enterprises, generating close to 80% of national employment.

🧵

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what that actually looks like in practice.

When we talk about production, many people imagine factories, centralized spaces where everyone works under the same roof, processes are clearly separated, and capacity can be managed within a single production line.

But a large part of production works very differently.

In many artisan systems, production is decentralized. The loom often lives inside the home, and work happens alongside everyday life, agriculture, family rhythms, and community life. Corn drying next to warp threads is not unusual.

Because of this, many of the management tools we typically apply to factories, whether related to efficiency, social compliance, or production planning don’t translate directly. They need to be adapted to a completely different production logic.

What’s also interesting is realizing the scale these systems can reach. Some businesses coordinate networks of hundreds of artisans working across multiple communities, with only a small central team managing design, distribution, or administration.

Yet artisan production is still often perceived as something small or informal.

Understanding these realities is essential when working with craft-based supply chains. by @selva_creative

In a forest, every root, leaf, and thread depends on the others.

That’s how we see the artisan ecosystem. Interconnected, resilient, and alive.

At Selva, we believe that strengthening one part of the system strengthens all: artisans, designers, and the planet.

🌱 Rooted in tradition, designed for the future.

Rooted in craft. Designed for connection.

In the world of craft, creation is never solitary. It’s a conversation, between technique and time, between individuals and their collective wisdom.

Selva was born from this same principle: growth happens together.

We work alongside artisan communities and creative businesses to build systems that honor tradition, encourage collaboration, and make sustainability a shared practice. 🤲
