Introducing the Oram Awards 2026 winners

Semay Wu is a Scotland-based composer, sound-artist, collaborator and cellist, prioritising free improvisation in electroacoustic, and often interdisciplinary perspectives. Her solos use improvisation as a basis for live-sampling on cello, voice, tapes and everyday objects.

With a 30-year discipline behind her, Semay has worked with dance, art, theatre and poetry, and has composed video-pieces, audio-for-exhibitions, graphic scores as well as making an online audio cookbook for Manchester’s communities: Sounds Like Scran, in 2021.

“It is a real honour to receive this ORAM Award. It is an incredibly nurturing and uplifting feeling to own. I really feel seen, and I now have a glimpse of deeply wished for things to come. Thank you so much.

Musicking, year-in, year-out, can be so hard, especially during recent years of a deeply wounded world and its people. With this bursary, I will spend an invaluable time to develop a new piece of writing that will focus and reflect on the world we live in, and to honour the experience of its inhabitants” @semay.wu

Macbeth: 11 Sept - 3rd Oct.
On Friday, we ran Macbeth in Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral Graveyard-Green, with unsuspecting dog walkers as our audience, and Madam Nature. I mean… wow.. Macbeth in the graveyard 😍🫶
Improvising to text which is vocalised like beat poetry, it’s so interesting to play with and respond to. If any of you would like to watch, you can get tickets at the Shakespeare North Playhouse site, or ask me for faves 🥰✨💫❤️‍🔥 hopefully see you 🖤 by @semay.wu

Macbeth
11th Sept to 3rd Oct
Shakespeare North Playhouse (Prescot)

The ‘quick raise’ process we are doing allows us to perform as we feel on the night, which means every day it’ll be performed differently. It’s a 360 stage, performed in candlelight, with two incredible director-facilitator-actors at the helm. Come see/contact me 🫶
