Join us as we kick off a new semester of Puerto Rican Bomba dance💃🏽🎶 and percussion🪘🪇 classes in the DC Metro area at Joe's Movement Emporium @joesmovement!

Classes available for all levels. No experience required. Just bring your curiosity and your energy! Teen/adult dance class is available virtually. Together we'll explore the rhythms, songs, dance, history, and traditions of Puerto Rican Bomba one beat at a time. Each class builds on the previous one.

Yesterday was one of those days that reminds us why we do what we do. 💚

Children, parents, grandparents, and community members joined us at Wolf Trap Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods for Sofía's Forest Adventure: Puerto Rican Bomba in the Woods. Together, we journeyed to Puerto Rico, explored El Yunque, met our newest friends Pica the Puerto Rican Parrot and Kokó the Coquí, who taught us about Puerto Rico's environmental resources. We also discovered the joy of Puerto Rican Bomba through music, storytelling, dance, and play.

We received heartfelt messages from families moved by the story, the songs, and the experience. Seeing children clap, dance, sing, and embrace our culture reminded us why preserving and sharing our traditions matters.

A special moment was introducing "Cotorra," a song composed by Isha's youngest daughter, Alejandra, with beautiful arrangements by Kutasha Silva.

Thank you to our incredible cast: Aryanna Santiago (Sofía), Victoria López (Pica), and Gabriella Rapallini (Kokó). Also thanks to Whittni Brown, Joelo Sanchez and Suly Ruiz for our beautiful stage props, and to our talented musicians, volunteers, and the amazing Wolf Trap @wolf_trap staff for making us feel so welcome. Thank you Josarie Molina and Garwin Zamora @grano_de_arena_pr for the beautiful coquí mask and attire our silly Kokó.

Yesterday wasn't just a performance, it was a celebration of culture, community, and belonging.

Thank you to everyone who traveled with us from the Virginia woods to El Yunque Rainforest and beyond 🇵🇷🪘🌿

🌱🪘🇵🇷 What a memorable weekend celebrating Puerto Rican Plena!

Back in April, Semilla Cultural had the privilege of welcoming master dancer and choreographer Raúl De La Paz @rulodelapaz for three community workshops across Virginia and Maryland, sharing the movement, music, and storytelling of Puerto Rican Plena.

A heartfelt thank you to Raúl De La Paz for sharing his knowledge and passion, and to our wonderful partners who made these events possible: Fredericksburg Area Museum @visit_fam, RappArts @rapparts_va, Cultura Plenera @cultura_plenera, Kadencia @kadenciapr, Claves Unidos @clavesunidos, Alicia Diaz @diazalicia1 and Latin Ballet of Virginia @latinballet. That's the mission behind Semilla Cultural.

On the FXBG Neighbors Podcast, Isha Renta Lopez shares how moving from Puerto Rico to Virginia inspired her to create a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and teaching Puerto Rican traditions throughout the region.

Founded 12 years ago and based in Fredericksburg, Semilla Cultural serves communities across Northern Virginia and beyond through cultural education, live performances, workshops, and lectures. Its goal is not only to help Puerto Ricans stay connected to their heritage, but also to invite the broader community to experience and appreciate the richness of Puerto Rican culture.

For Isha, Semilla Cultural is exactly what its name represents, a cultural seed. One that continues to grow by creating opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn, connect, and celebrate traditions that might otherwise be unfamiliar.

By sharing culture through education, music, dance, and storytelling, Semilla Cultural is helping build a stronger, more connected community, one experience at a time.

En marzo recibí una llamada del Municipio Autónomo de Caguas @caguasgovpr preguntándome si podían adaptar Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba a una obra con su Teatro de Títeres para niñxs durante su Feria Anual del Libro, lo cual me sacó una enorme sonrisa. Jamás imaginé que un cuento que escribí para conectar a los niñxs con la cultura puertorriqueña algún día cobraría vida sobre un escenario, y en Puerto Rico.

En abril tuve el privilegio de ver ese sueño hacerse realidad. Ver a Sofía salir de las páginas de un libro y convertirse en una obra de teatro fue un momento profundamente emocionante. El amor, la creatividad y el cuidado que se reflejaron en esta producción fueron evidentes en cada detalle.

Mi más sincero agradecimiento al Municipio Autónomo de Caguas y su Departmento de Desarrollo Cultural, al Teatro de Títeres, al elenco, y muy especialmente a Paula y sus padres por dar vida a Sofía con tanto cariño. 💛

También fue muy especial poder compartir este momento con mis padres, mis amigos Tamil y Danny, y mi suegra, quienes estuvieron allí para compartir conmigo este hermoso momento. Esto es una experiencia que siempre guardaré en mi corazón.

Cuando escribí Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba, mi deseo era sembrar una semilla cultural en los niños. Ver cómo esa semilla sigue germinando de formas que nunca imaginé es uno de los regalos más grandes que me ha dado este proyecto.

¡Gracias, Caguas, por creer en Sofía y por permitirle seguir inspirando a nuevas generaciones a través del teatro! 🌱🇵🇷🪘📚

What an incredible day at the Smithsonian! 🌱🇵🇷🪘📚 Last April we had the honor of opening the ¡Puro Ritmo! The Musical Journey of Salsa exhibition at the @uslatinomuseum with a special Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba storytime, followed by an interactive Bomba workshop and toque for children, families, and the staff of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino. It was a joyful celebration of Puerto Rican culture, music, and storytelling.

Thank you to the Smithsonian for this unforgettable opportunity and to everyone who joined us in the Learning Lounge to start the day with so much rhythm and joy!
