It is with both gratitude and best wishes that we announce Dr. Samantha Washington’s transition to another university closer to home. We wanted to highlight just how amazing she was during her time here!

After joining our department in 2020, Dr. Washington has made a lasting impact through her dedication to teaching, mentorship, research, service, and global engagement.

As a clinical supervisor and instructor, she inspired undergraduate and graduate students across courses in literacy, culturally responsive practice, special populations, professional issues, and senior seminar. She also mentored countless student research projects, with many earning top honors at state conventions and student research conferences.

Her commitment to service extended well beyond the classroom. She provided leadership on numerous department and university committees, including the Black Faculty Staff Alliance, the EHHS Sankofa Mentorship Program, Academic Appeals, Department Scholarships, and the NBASLH Cares Committee. She also gave generously of her time through organizations such as Special Olympics, Smile Train, the English Conversation Club, and as an ASHA STEP Mentor.

Her excellence has been recognized with numerous honors, including the ASHA Award for Continuing Education (ACE), the University Civic and Global Engagement Award, and the EHHS Outstanding Service Award. Through multiple study abroad therapy experiences in Belize, Guatemala, and Dominica, she expanded opportunities for students while fostering meaningful global partnerships and culturally responsive clinical experiences.

As Dr. Washington begins an exciting new chapter at another university, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the countless ways she has strengthened our department, enriched the lives of our students, and advanced our mission. We wish her continued success and know she will make the same lasting impact wherever she goes!

Day THREE of celebrating our 2026 graduate class! Why the number 2,270? That’s how many direct clinical clock hours the 2026 cohort has gained at the on-campus Center for Speech and Hearing! WOW!

2,270 hours spent helping a two-year-old speak their first words, providing structured literacy intervention for a child with DLD and dyslexia, working on medication management with an individual post-stroke, facilitating aphasia group therapy, modeling AAC, counseling fluency clients, creating meaningful phonological intervention activities and SO MUCH MORE. Outside of these 2,270 direct contact hours, our graduates spent time preparing, writing notes, and spending much needed time in the clinic workroom with one another. Way to go future SLPs!

While all of our graduates go on to complete two externships off campus, they develop confidence, clinical knowledge, and critical thinking skills here at the Center first. We are so proud of their work and commitment! by @semospeechhearing

Day TWO ✌🏻 of celebrating our 2026 graduate cohort. Today’s topic: RESEARCH!

Over the past two years students have completed graduate research projects and theses. What’s involved? A lot! IRB approval, literature reviews, data collection, statistical analysis, and reporting results. Students then present their findings at various conferences, including @showmemsha Annual Convention, @ashaweb Annual Convention, and @semissouristate Student Research Conference.

Class of 2026 Week! Throughout the week we will highlight our graduating Master of Arts students. Today’s topic- externship! Our second-year cohort recently wrapped up semester long placements in a variety of clinical settings- hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools. Swipe through to view the externship daily schedule of five graduate students: Olivia Herring, Sydney Beasley, Bryn Meyr, Mollie Jennings, qnd Samantha Coffee.

Within the graduate program, students complete on-campus clinicals at the Center for Speech and Hearing. Following completion, they then travel to complete both pediatric and adult-based placements in Southeast Missouri area or back home. These combined experiences provide the 400 clinical clock hours necessary to apply for licensure! by @semospeechhearing

Awards season!
Last night, the College of Education, Health, and Human Studies @semoehhs held the awards banquet for the academic year. Each department honors students as well as awards given to faculty within the college for their work. Congrats to this year’s recipients!
