I spent my 41st birthday doing exactly what I wanted to be doing—advocating for military families in the offices of our elected officials at our nation’s capitol with @secure_families . As I reflect on my birthday this year, I have one piece of wisdom…

Never stop showing up in the spaces that will give you an opportunity to share your voice—no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable it is. If you want to see change, you have to say yes. These past two days, I sat in the offices of both democrats and republicans—with the goal of making sure they knew the issues military families faced. Taking care of military families and veterans should never be partisan. Period.

Nothing brings me more joy than getting talk about and share the importance of keeping the conversations around veteran mental health open, honest, and authentic. I love the look of surprise on people’s faces when I tell them, “I’m a Marine veteran”. I had some professor from the University of Alabama tell me, “you don’t look like a Marine!”

Umm…I don’t know what you expect me to look like?

ANYWAY….I got to meet and speak to so many educators in higher Ed and student leaders from campuses across the country this week about Make the Connection, and share some of the amazing stories in this campaign.

It was also so great to be back in New England. When Nick and I lived there, it was just a tough time for us. I had just gotten out of the Marines, and was going through a literal identity crisis…We were broke af because we lost an entire income suddenly…and our marriage was crumbling. I left New England with nothing but bad memories. But coming back here after overcoming all that we went through made me fall in love with this place all over again. For Dannika’s Senior homecoming, her sweet friend’s parents hosted all the girls that their beautiful home to get ready and take photos. So I decided to put together a little “GRWM” gift baskets for the girls getting ready together.

I ordered @summerfridays lip gloss and eye masks, and @touchland hand sanitizers from @revolve, and bought the last of the @mykitsch hair perfume samplers from @miasmarketplace here in Surf City.

I filled the basket with a @starbucks Frappuccino and a @drinkpoppi……a bag of @cheezit….a packet of @tridentgum and @nerdscandy clusters.
