The @senaptec vision and reaction test helps measure how fast your brain and eyes process information in real time. Using the touchscreen system, we can test reaction speed, peripheral awareness, hand-eye coordination, cognitive processing, and overall visual performance. Small improvements in reaction time can make a huge difference when it comes to sports performance, training, and everyday movement.

Sports vision science aims to identify not only specific visual abilities essential for competitive performance, but also which of these abilities can be improved through training. What have we learned?

Many published training studies have lacked rigor in design, complicating their interpretation, but others have provided insights. Researchers found that training novice and intermediate basketball players in gaze control characteristics of elite free-throw shooters significantly improved their accuracy relative to matched control groups doing standard training (1).
Adapting pro eye movement patterns could be a shortcut for accessing the most informative and/or earliest visual cues for optimal performance and learning to respond to them (2).

Other researchers have trained perceptual-cognitive functions that gaze control supports and oculomotor functions that support gaze control. One team found that elite skeet shooters had significantly better hit accuracy and shotgun-mounting reaction time, and more efficient gun barrel movement kinematics, after six weeks of computerized training on the Senaptec Station - Performance in visuospatial processing, selective visual attention and working memory, and oculomotor functions, relative to a matched control group doing standard target tracking (3).

What could this tell us about sport training?

Increasing evidence suggests that contextual inference, not a single sensorimotor context, determines how and when motor skill learning occurs and is applied, indicating that learning and applying motor skills may depend on cognitive functions including working memory (4).

As gaze control and visual working memory and attention are tightly linked for guiding behavior (5), visual working memory and attention may be key perceptual-cognitive functions supporting motor performance.

Computerized activities with high perceptual-cognitive loads can improve visual working memory and selective attention over space and time (6), so if these functions underlie learning and application of motor skills, such training could transfer to sport performance, as well as to daily living for non-athletes. by @senaptec

Measuring vision in sport is a 105-year-old idea.

1921: Columbia University psychologists tested Babe Ruth in the laboratory. His response to a light was timed at 160 thousandths of a second, against an average of 180. One athlete, reported in a popular magazine.

1985: a standardized sports vision battery, built at Pacific University and used with Olympic athletes.

2011: nine measures on a computer-based system, tested for repeatability.

2018: in 252 professional baseball players, scores tracked on-base percentage, walk rate and strikeout rate. They did not track slugging or pitching.

The question has not changed. The sample size has.

Researchers have been systematically investigating how athletes' visual abilities and strategies relate to performance for around 80 years (Winograd, 1942).

From this work, we know that elite performers control their eyes differently. For example, expert cricket batsmen make faster eye movements than amateurs to where they predict the ball will hit the ground (Land & McLeod, 2000). Expert goalkeepers more accurately predict the direction of a penalty kick than amateurs and do so by looking at fewer and different locations on the kicker (Savelsbergh et al., 2002).

We've also learned that athletes perceive and act on visual cues earlier and with better accuracy. Expert squash players more accurately predict the outcome of an opponent's stroke than amateurs and can do so from visual cues earlier in the opponent's movement (Abernathy, 1990). Similarly, expert basketball players predict the success of shots more accurately than amateurs and from earlier visual information, including before the ball leaves the hand of the player throwing it (Agloiti et al., 2008).

Sports vision science aims to understand these differences and identify how sport-related visual skills can be improved at all levels of play. The Senaptec Station - Performance was designed to facilitate those goals by providing a standardized testing battery of fundamental visual skills for sport that can be deployed anywhere in the world for players of all sports, positions, and levels.
