Huckleberry, The Hound of Hounds.

He’s seen more of this country than most do in a lifetime.

He’s tracked deer through swamps, backed moose down in river lands, and kept cougars out of camp in the mountains.

He’s hiked red rock canyons and swam in glacier lakes that people travel across the world to paint.

He’s splooted on every surface known to the modern world, thieved full racks of ribs from ill guarded BBQs, and shamelessly claimed shotgun in every boat he’s ever been on.

I’ve seen him make friends in high places, and keep enemies out of the low ones in between.

In his time, he’s been a fearless protector, loyal travel mate, relentless fishing partner, furry support blanket, best friend, sausage roll, and a downright pain in my ass from time to time.

He’s been a lot of things over the years, but most importantly, he’s been a once in a lifetime kind of companion.

There just aren’t many dogs like him that could out fish you without a rod or pair of opposable thumbs.

Some might call him the most interesting dog in the world.

But to me, he’s my Huckleberry.

And he always will be.
