Don,

I’m still so in shock to know that you’re gone. It doesn’t feel real. I really wish it wasn’t true, I wish someone were playing some sick and awful prank on all of us.

I believe that the impact you’ve left on me and so many others is such a testament to how wonderful of a person you were. I am so thankful every single day that I was so lucky enough to get the chance to meet you. It really feels like I knew you so much longer than three months, because in that time I learned so much from you. You taught me so much not only about animation and my greatest passions, but also about how to live life, how to appreciate the time we have and about how to be a kind and compassionate human being in general.

You always lit up a room, and I would look forward to all your classes. The image of you standing at the front and chuckling and grinning at our animations or works in progress keeps playing over in my head. When you gave us a new assignment I would be giggling thinking of all the silly things I wanted to put in my projects to get a laugh out of you and out of everyone in our class (like the green guy from the walk cycle example you told us over and over to ignore). I loved all of your silly little stories and ‘Don lore’. You were so goofy and funny and so wise and had the best sense of humour. I have some quotes of yours written down to put in our graduation book next year when the time comes.

I miss you so, so much Don. I really wish we had more time. I am heartbroken at the thought of carrying on, of moving forward without you here. To be in the program that you built without you here. But each time I feel overwhelmed by this, I hear your voice or recall your twenty minute rant at the start of class that one day – about how important it is to take care of ourselves, to get enough sleep, to eat well, to drink water, to go on a walk around campus or to those walking trails past the horses by our school. To ‘get a C if you have to’. And so I make sure that I get enough sleep, eat well, and that I go outside. Because I know that’s what you’d want for all of us.
