Years ago, when I was in the restaurant business, a business partner put on a chef’s coat and apron and said:

“Look. Now I’m a chef.”

I replied:

“It takes five minutes to look like a chef. It takes years to become one.”

You can wear the coat, pick up a knife and stand behind the line, but becoming a chef requires years of repetition: mastering ingredients and equipment, leading a team, correcting mistakes and staying calm under pressure.

Real estate is no different. Anyone can put on a suit, print business cards and look like an agent. But it takes years to master the craft.

That means negotiating difficult deals, reading the room, understanding the market, managing personalities, solving unexpected problems and keeping clients calm when transactions go sideways.

Eventually, every deal gets tested: an inspection reveals an issue, an appraisal misses the mark, financing hits a wall or a buyer or seller changes direction. That’s when experience matters.

As Mike Tyson famously said:

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Anybody can look the part.

The professionals know what to do after they get punched. by @sensei.david
