wrote a critical essay on sage Bat-Ami Rivlin’s show “Untitled (radiators, zip ties)” at Management this past spring for @sensusphilly

many thanks to Macy and Diego for producing such a beautifully crafted platform for discourse. and ofc to Bat-Ami for trusting me to write your work in constellation with Malevich, Hannah Arendt, and DuPont. importantly also for gently vetoing a detour to ancient Rome 😂☝️

“You can dismantle a thing, but you cannot undo an action. Arendt observed the erosion of the durable world through the acceleration of global industrial manufacturing and computational technology in the wake of the World Wars. Action - her principle condition for Being through thinking, and ultimately her skewer of Heidegger - endures beyond the constructed objects, images, and ideologies of society. Utility is entirely contingent on social context; therefore, pure utilitarianism is ultimately meaningless. She explains further,
“The only way out of the dilemma of meaninglessness in all strictly utilitarian philosophy is to turn away from the objective world of use things and fall back upon the subjectivity of use itself.” (Arendt, 155)

Malevich’s feeling bears similarity to Arendt’s subjectivity. There is something uniquely durable, therefore, in art and its ability to skirt use and use-value, “since [it is] not subject to the use of living creatures, a use which, indeed, far from actualizing [its] own inherent purpose-— as the purpose of a chair is actualized when it is sat upon—can only destroy [it]” (Arendt, 167).

Rivlin’s installation is as much an evidence of action as it is an arrangement of things which take a long time to erode. There are perhaps three tangible materials in the work: cast iron, heat-resistant enamel or urethane-alkyd paints, and nylon. Intangible, invisible materials are the two-day endurance of the artist and her assistants in transportation of the radiators, and of the artist in the additional five day, 6-8 hour/day install, physically pushing the solid iron radiators on furniture cushions to reach their final composition….” by @sensusphilly

BLACKnet’s third artist member is Logan Crompton ✨

Logan Crompton [b. 2000, Kansas City, MO] is a Black, post-post-internet artist based in Philadelphia, PA. Logan, as an artist, is concerned with Black corporeal and immaterial realities, Black image and the internet, and protection and reclamation of said image. Logan considers the recurring throughlines of African spiritual systems of belief, and reappropriation and reclamation as it appears within their life and practice. Their work explores said themes through mythmaking, memes, magic, matrixes, algorithms, and repetition as mantra.

Logan received their BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in Painting and Art History and their MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art and Architecture. They were previously a Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and an AXA art prize finalist. Logan currently works as a Teaching Artist, educating both at the university and elementary level at Temple University and Coco Academy respectively.

Shori Sims (b. Baltimore) is the second member of BLACKnet collective. They are a multidisciplinary artist and educator currently based in Birmingham, AL. Utilizing performance and new media, Shori foregrounds digital tools in the exploration of the complex nature of identity as amorphous and ever-changing, and virtual space as a container of memory. Driven by their investigations into the archive, Sims’ videos and installations approach virtual space as both embodied and formless. They maintain a research and writing forward practice with scholarly interests in linguistics, symbology, and film theory.

Sims graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with their MFA in Sculpture in 2024, and exhibitions of their video and moving-image work have taken place at april april gallery in Pittsburgh, NADA LES in New York City, and Vox Populi in Philadelphia. Solo exhibitions of Shori’s work have taken place in Pittsburgh and Birmingham at Gallery 707 and the Old Bailey respectively, and sites of institutional exhibitions include Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Museum and the Gadsden Museum of Art. Shori’s written works are held by libraries including the Brown University Library, and in various institutional archives.

We’ll be introducing BLACKnet’s three artists over the next few days starting with Dante Moore 🧡🧡

Dante Moore (b. 2000) is an artist from Tulsa, Oklahoma. They’re currently based out of Chicago. IL. Moore received their BFA in Photography from the Kansas City Art Institute, and received an interdisciplinary MFA from the University of Illinois Chicago. They create large installations and worldbuild through airbrush, photography, collage, technology, and computer
games.

Moore’s work examines internet culture’s influence on their formative years spent online.
They’re fascinated with the concepts of mimetics and how meme culture mimics art. Moore’s art practice tries to communicate their experience growing up immersed in memes and social media. Their work has been described as a type of “meme graveyard” that attempts to freeze the forgotten waste of social media. They build worlds peppered with sunflowers, emojis, meadows, and towers of forgotten internet vernacular.

Victoria Stitt is one of our featured poets for Issue 3.0 🩷💚🩷

A Philadelphia native, victoria stitt is currently thinking about ways home, building a home, nesting, snail trails, and heartache. Their poems have been nominated for Best New Poetry, Best of the Net, and have appeared in Poetry Daily, the Michigan Quarterly Review, The Carolina Quarterly, and others. They were named a finalist for the Sewanee Review Poetry Contest in 2025, have been awarded residencies at Vermont Studio Center and Storyknife, and received their MFA from Warren Wilson College. Currently, victoria teaches English to high schoolers at a boarding school in New Jersey, aiming to instill in their students a love of language.
