coming to zanzibar with a baby for the first time felt like a big transition after spending the first five months of his life completely in europe…

suddenly, the feeling of a place started to matter so much more than before. i wanted calmness, greenery for little strolls, space to breathe, a sense of routine… somewhere daily life could actually feel soft and easy as a family.

and i think that’s why we ended up loving life here @thesoulafrica so much 🌿 especially during a season of so much change, it became a place that slowly helped us find our new rhythm here.

when your baby is half Tanzanian, life on a monday can look like this hehe 🌺✨🌈💛🌸

exploring life here with a baby has felt different, but not in the way I expected. funnily, we’re still doing most of the same things as before like slow mornings, time outside, moving between places throughout the day… just now with him in our arms. :) and maybe that’s what surprised me most. how possible it still feels. how little it actually takes here to keep living the life we love, just in a slightly different rhythm. wondering how that will be once we return to Berlin… if we ever will 😂

this day held all my favorite things 🌺😍 morning cuddles, family time, breakfast outside, warm air and slow hours! it did rain later though… but I guess this is exactly what rainy season here looks like. 🤍🌿

this place was one of those little finds that just felt good from the second we got there :)

so much charm, so quiet, so private and somehow you could feel the history of the place without it feeling old-fashioned at all!

& we basically did very little and that was kind of the point 😂

my love language might actually be taking pictures of everything 😭

if something has a nice light, a pretty table, a good atmosphere, someone i love in it or just somehow feels like a moment i’ll want to remember… there’s a very high chance it ends up in my camera roll :)

which is also why i have about 90k photos and can never find anything when i actually need it :) who else??

i think the older i get, the less interested i am in building a life that only looks good on paper :)

i want family across countries, work that gives me freedom, motherhood woven into my life without becoming my whole identity, and more than one place to feel like home.

somewhere between europe, zanzibar, family life, beautiful places and all the ordinary days in between, i’m slowly building my own version of a good life 🤍 and yes, i’ll probably always romanticise it a little hihi

i love beautiful things, beautiful places & making everyday life feel special. that’s genuinely part of me.

and maybe that’s really it: i want a lot from life, and i’m okay with that!

i was born and raised in switzerland and lived here permanently until i was 24, so of course this is the place where “home” first meant something very simple to me… the language, the food, the people, knowing how everything works without having to think about it ☺️

then i started travelling, living in different places and slowly building a life that didn’t fit into just one country anymore.

and i think that’s what changed my idea of home the most :)

some places give me familiarity. some give me independence. some hold certain people, memories or little routines i really miss when i’m away.

and somehow all of those things can be true at the same time.

maybe that’s one of the nicest things i’ve learned from living this way: home doesn’t always have to compete with another home. sometimes you just collect different versions of it along the way 🤍🌿

turns out becoming a mom and living between countries makes you question quite a few things you once thought were non-negotiable 😄🤍

from having to choose just one place to call home to the idea that motherhood means putting your own dreams on hold… i’ve definitely changed my mind about a few things over the past year :)

our life between europe and zanzibar isn’t always as glamorous as my camera roll might suggest (yes, we still have to figure out what’s for dinner haha), but i’m learning to appreciate the different versions of everyday life that come with it!

and somewhere between raising a very curious one-year-old and trying to build something of my own, i’m getting a much clearer idea of the life i actually want.

now, I’m curious!! what’s something you’ve said no to that you’re now really happy about??

a year ago i was learning how to be someone’s mama... now i’m apparently also responsible for explaining why we have several places we call home heheh ☺️

it’s been a year of firsts in berlin, sandy days in zanzibar, finnish summers and family time in switzerland… & somewhere along the way, the newborn i brought home last september turned into a very curious little boy 🤍

sometimes i wonder which bits of all these places will stay with him as he grows up. the sounds, the languages, the people, the everyday things that feel completely normal to him now.

ahhh and suddenly it’s october again 🥹

i used to think the exciting part of travelling was always going somewhere new…

but the more i move between places, the more i realise how much i love coming back to the ones i already know. knowing the roads, having favourite corners, recognizing the little routines that somehow pick up again almost exactly where you left them :)

this tiny Finnish village where my grandparents live is one of those places. i’ve spent summers here for as long as i can remember and there’s just something really comforting about arriving and knowing that not much has changed!!

maybe i don’t actually need every chapter of life to happen somewhere new. some places just get better the more memories you collect there 🌿🥰🫐💌

one of those afternoons I wish I could bottle up :)

we were staying at my grandparents’ house in this tiny Finnish village with maybe ten people left and somehow ended up sitting in the neighbour’s garden talking about old stories from the area 🥹

mild late-summer weather, butterflies everywhere, baby boy next to me, nowhere to rush to… just the coziest little Saturday 🤍

a Finnish summer in a village of about ten people… thought I might get bored here hehe!!

we spent part of our summer at my grandparents‘ house and somewhere between hanging laundry, playing in the garden and watching baby boy discover everything, I realised how much I love sharing these little pieces of my childhood with him 🤍

our everyday life looks quite different depending on whether we’re in Zanzibar or Europe, but that’s what makes coming back to these familiar little rituals even more special!

turns out all we needed was a garden, a little sunshine and a baby with plenty to explore hehe :)

anyone else secretly dreaming of a summer where absolutely nothing happens??
