Polyculture is a word that describes a farming method where two or more crops are grown together in the same area at the same time. This controlled method of growing aims to mimic natural horticulture found in places like Bangkok, Thailand, thus promoting biodiversity.

I believe diversity is the key to truly connecting with our human nature. Contrasting elements, ideas, religions; it fosters a dynamic experience that promotes thought and challenges pre-conceived notions. We live in uncertain times, where division threatens the cross-pollination of our diversity. It’s in these times more important than ever to foster conditions where diversity can be nurtured, just as the horticulture continues to do in places like Thailand.

This show celebrates the idea of polyculture, not merely as a way to witness and to connect with each other, but also to promote a culturally-rich existence, and a profound appreciation for humanity as a whole.

@seohstudio presents “ELEGIES” a two chapter solo exhibition.

CHAPTER I: LITTLE DEATHS

"Elegies" is a two-part solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Se Oh. Featuring over seventy new porcelain sculptures punctuated with multi-sensory and ritualistic performances, this narrative exhibition explores the intimate relationships and histories that can be drawn between senses, mediums, ceremonies, and spiritual lineages.

Adopted from South Korea and raised in America’s South, Oh focuses on the liminality of their identity as an adopted Korean-American who assimilated into the culture of the American South at a very young age. "My relationship with death began with my parents mourning my eternal life," says Oh. "This triggered me to kill many parts of myself in order to survive as a queer adoptee, transplanted into not only American Southern culture, but also living within the 'Bible Belt. By the time I reached my early twenties, I was a master at killing the parts of myself that didn't serve me. This skill was born from necessity in my adolescence, but later, had transformed into a tool I still use to this day. A tool to clear out what doesn't serve me to make room for new."

Divided in two distinct chapters, "Elegies" aims to create a space where people can come and reflect on the inevitable cycle we are all part of, a brief moment to simultaneously embrace death with one arm and welcome rebirth with the other.

The exhibition's first chapter will unveil over sixty hand-thrown porcelain vessels lining the gallery walls. Each vessel, based on Korean burial ceramics, represents a specific touch point in one's life where something is replaced or evolves. Upon entering the space, viewers will be invited to write down on incense paper a "little death" they've experienced, then light it and place it in a hand-painted vessel created by the artist. The incense paper, created for this exhibition by multidisciplinary artist @park_hyun_gi is made with Korean Hanji paper from mulberry bark and soaked in fragrances of chrysanthemum, a flower traditionally associated with Korean funerals.

Floating Orchids
High Fire Porcelain
2026

Often times wild orchids are found anchored to large trees. These resilient plants absorb water and nutrients from the air taking nothing from their host tree. What the tree provides these orchids with is a place to take root and call home.

“Floating Orchids” is a multi piece porcelain sculpture suspended in air, no tree, no anchor, no place to call home. As a queer Korean American adoptee, I see these small vessels as a metaphor for those who live their lives without an “anchor”, suspended in the liminal space between cultures, between communities, between “trees”. I, as many others, lead a beautiful life of solitude, forever floating…
