When is "K-beauty" not Korean?

Meet JIYU. It's one of the fastest-growing Korean skincare brands in the US, projected to pass $100 million in 2026 on triple-digit growth, with 9,500+ five-star reviews on a toner pad that sells for $59.99. It's also, by its own telling, founded by two American women, Jen and Hannah, who got hooked on a trip to Seoul and built a brand around it.

Here's the tell. On its own About page, JIYU writes: "Unlike brands that only borrow the 'K-Beauty' name, every element of our products is genuinely made in South Korea." An American-founded company, pre-emptively insisting it's more Korean than the Korean brands.

To be clear: the product really is formulated and made in Korea. That part is true. Then in July 2026, at the $100M mark, JIYU named Seoul-born Sora Lee (ex-Netflix, Meta, TikTok) as co-founder and CEO. The Korean identity arrived after the growth did.

So how do you actually read a "K-beauty" label? Four things say Korea (formula, ingredients, where it's made, the reviews). Two say America (who founded it, who runs it). The label on the jar only ever shows you the first four.

None of this makes JIYU a scam. It makes "K-beauty" a label, not a passport, one any brand can manufacture in Korea and wear, and JIYU wears it louder and better than most. It's selling the idea of Korea back to the Americans who came looking for it.

Made in Korea, built by Americans. Are you buying Korean skincare, or the idea of it? Either can be a fine answer. Just decide with your eyes open.

Foam Theater. Korea's fizzing pore masks are the summer's most-filmed skincare, and P.CALM's Holy Basil Bubble Deep Mask is the one on every feed.

Here is the trick. It goes on as a matcha-green clay, then within a few minutes it erupts into a dense white foam you rinse away. The fizz looks like the deep clean at work. It is not. Those bubbles are carbonated water and a little escaping gas, a sensory flourish built for the camera.

The actual labor is done by the clay. Montmorillonite, the first ingredient, is an absorbent mineral that draws oil and debris up out of the pores while the mask sits. Holy basil, chaga and chamomile calm the skin, a touch of PHA polishes, and the 13 percent on the jar is simply the sparkling water that makes it foam.

P.CALM makes three: Holy Basil for calm, sensitive skin, Turmeric with BHA for oil and blackheads, and Red Rice with tranexamic acid for tone. Around 25 dollars, and none have reached US shelves yet. They ship from Seoul, or through importers like YesStyle. Seoul gets the good stuff first.

It looks like a scoop of matcha rice cake. It's a face wash, and one of the cult cleansers in Korea right now.

Arencia whips fresh, fermented ingredients into a springy, grainy paste you scoop from the jar. Despite the name (tteok soap, or rice-cake soap) there's no lye in it. Bar soap runs high on the pH scale and leaves skin tight. This cleans with mild, coconut-derived surfactants and glycerin at a skin-friendly pH, and the soft grit doubles as a gentle daily polish.

What's doing the work: witch hazel to clear pores, green tea to calm redness, rice water and powder to brighten. On Olive Young it holds 4.7 stars across 178 reviews, a merchandiser's pick, and it's vegan. About 15 dollars on sale.

It comes in three: Fresh Green for a deep clean, Royal Rosehip for drier skin, and Royal Blue Hyssop to keep things calm.

The catch: it's a small Korean label, not on US shelves. It ships from Seoul, or through importers like Soko Glam. Seoul gets the good stuff first.

In a Korean office, lunch ends at the bathroom sink. As one Seoul worker put it on Reddit, the building bathroom is packed the last 5 to 10 minutes of the lunch hour with people brushing.

It traces back to a 1980s dental campaign, the 3-3-3 rule: brush three times a day, within three minutes of eating, for three minutes. Korean adults now average about 2.7 brushings a day (KNHANES), and lunch is the one most of the world skips. It reads as etiquette as much as hygiene. Korean food leans on garlic and chili, and one Seoul taxi driver told the Korea Herald that brushing after lunch is "a gesture of respect toward my passengers."

The honest part: it isn't universal. These days about half of Koreans skip the post-lunch brush (KNHANES, 2015). And dentists push back on the rule's most famous line. After acidic food, brushing within three minutes can scrub softened enamel, so the ADA says wait about 30 minutes.

It also built a market. Korea's oral care is worth nearly $1 billion a year (Daxue, 2024), and a beauty house runs one of its biggest names: Median is made by Amorepacific.

To steal it, pack a desk kit: a travel toothbrush, a mini toothpaste, a tongue scraper, a small mouthwash. Brush after lunch. Just wait 30 minutes.

Searches for capsule creams jumped 1,379% in a year. Gel creams jumped 196%. So what are they, and do the beads actually do anything.

Capsules are tiny shells, liposomes or microspheres, that seal one active inside: vitamin C, PDRN, retinol. They break open when you press them in.

The real reason they exist: some actives die in air and light. Vitamin C goes brown, retinol degrades. Sealing them keeps them potent until the moment of use.

The catch: the satisfying pop is mostly sensory. What matters is whether the active is genuinely stabilized, not the show. There is little proof a bursting bead beats a well formulated regular cream.

So who should buy one? You, if you use finicky actives like vitamin C, retinol, or PDRN, or your serums keep oxidizing. Skip it if you just want everyday moisture. A plain cream is fine, and cheaper.

A real example on shelves: Medicube's Deep Vita C Capsule Cream seals vitamin C in capsules that burst on contact.

Spicule serums went viral as "liquid microneedling." Here are 5 things the trend gets wrong.

Spicules are silica spikes from a sponge, about 200 to 350 microns long. You press them on and they scratch thousands of tiny channels into your skin.

1. It is not real microneedling. The spikes only reach the top layer, far shallower and less precise than the in-clinic needle.
2. The tingle is not the product working. That sting is micro-injury, hundreds of tiny wounds, not a serum sinking in.
3. They can stay in your skin for up to 72 hours, shedding over about three days.
4. It is not a daily serum. It is a one to two times a week treatment. Daily use shreds your barrier.
5. It is not for everyone. Skip it if your skin is sensitive, or you have rosacea, eczema or active acne. Dermatologists have started flagging the risks (JAAD, 2025).

Used right, it works. Press, do not rub. Once or twice a week, moisturize right after, skip strong acids and retinol for a day, and wear sunscreen.

So should you buy it? Yes, for healthy skin that wants smoother texture. The needling is real. Just respect it.

Korea injects salmon DNA into the skin. The US bottles it into serums. Only one of them does what the ads promise.

The viral salmon sperm facial is an injection, placed in the dermis where it can actually signal repair. Rejuran has been a Seoul clinic staple for about ten years. Then K-beauty bottled the same ingredient into serums and pads, now all over Ulta.

Here is the part the labels skip. PDRN is a giant molecule, more than a hundred times bigger than what skin absorbs, and it carries a charge your skin pushes away. The clinical results all come from needles, not creams. That is why brands now sell particles 250x smaller, nanosized versions and microneedle shots, all built to force it deeper. The tell is in the marketing.

One more thing. A lot of topical PDRN is not even salmon. It is a plant rose version.

None of this makes the serum a scam. It is gentle, hydrating skincare, and the peptides and niacinamide pull their weight. Just know you are buying the story of the needle.

The ingredients Americans are actually obsessed with right now. We read 13,123 US skincare videos to rank them.

Collagen leads, but the K-beauty signatures are right behind: centella (cica) at #3, now mentioned more than retinol, and salmon-DNA PDRN cracking the top 5. Two years ago PDRN was a Seoul clinic injection. Now it's in 1 of every 30 US skincare videos.

And the fade: snail mucin, the ingredient that made K-beauty famous here, is down to under 1%. The obsession moved on.

Which one's actually in your routine? We read every reply. @seoul_dispatch

Olive Young Global's top 10 best-sellers this week. Saved you the scroll.

The headline: a BTS ARIRANG picture-disc vinyl is the #1 seller at $67. K-pop and K-beauty ring up at the same register.

Anua took three of the top ten (#8, #9, #10): a PDRN capsule mist, a niacinamide and tranexamic-acid dark-spot serum, and a PDRN moisturizing cream, each more than half off. Salmon-DNA PDRN shows up twice on the list, and celimax's retinal booster sits at #2 ($18).

Highest rated on the list: SKIN1004's Centella sun serum and Mediheal's toner pad, both 4.9.

Several of the top 10 are around 50% off, so it's a sale week. We pull this every week.

Which one's in your cart? @seoul_dispatch

6,000 people lined up for Olive Young's first US store. The line started at 3pm the day before. Then the reviews turned.

The store was a hit. The rollout around it was the problem. The Pasadena flagship curates about 5,000 products from 400 brands, a slice of what Korea carries across its 1,380+ stores. The bundles and 1+1 deals vanished. And direct shipping from Korea quietly ended, with US orders now shipping from US stock. Reddit noticed all of it.

The part most coverage missed: none of this is a stumble. A California warehouse only holds what it can hold. A lower free-shipping bar, now $35 instead of $60, nudges repeat orders. Discover in store, repurchase online is the exact playbook Olive Young runs at home, copied to LA.

The haul era didn't end by accident. It was the price of becoming an American retailer.

Your K-beauty feed is six months behind Seoul. That's not an insult, it's a measurement.

Korea's beauty cycle runs 6 to 12 months ahead of the US shelf. We watch the gap in the data: 54,832 videos indexed across 5 markets, plus export stats, retail filings, and job postings. Issue 001 is what the gap looks like this week.

The haul era is over. Olive Young opened in Pasadena on May 29, drew some 6,000 people in a weekend, then quietly ended direct shipping from Korea.

Medicube now holds roughly 15.8% of skincare sales on US Amazon. Five years ago most Americans couldn't name a single K-beauty brand.

Salmon DNA outranked retinol. In the 13,123 US videos we indexed in May, PDRN got tagged more often. It started as a Gangnam clinic shot that ran a few hundred dollars. It's a $25 serum now.

The tingle in VT's Reedle Shot? Sea-sponge skeletons. Microscopic spicules made from marine sponge, millions of bottles sold.

And no, Korea isn't the world's top beauty exporter. France is, by about $13B. Korea is the #1 source of cosmetics imported into the US. Different races, and almost everyone quotes the wrong one.

New dispatch every week. @seoul_dispatch

America's sunscreen just caught up to Korea. By one ingredient.

On June 9 the FDA approved bemotrizinol, the first new UV filter it's added to its sunscreen rulebook since the 1990s. Korea, Europe, and Japan have used it for over two decades.

A few things the headlines got wrong.

Your Beauty of Joseon sunscreen still can't be sold here. The viral Relief Sun doesn't even contain bemotrizinol, and the K-beauty SPFs that do still pack filters the FDA hasn't cleared. US brands will build new formulas around it, with the first landing within two to three months.

And it's not the catch-up it sounds like. The US now allows about 17 UV filters. The EU allows 29. Korea and Japan each allow around 30. Filters like Tinosorb M and Uvinul A Plus are still banned here.

The reason is structural. The US treats sunscreen like a drug, not a cosmetic, which is why it fell 25 years behind. One filter slipped through. There's nothing else on the FDA's desk.

A crack in the dam, not the whole dam.
