부대육칼면 Budae Yukkal 🍜🌶️

Two Korean comfort classics in one pot 🍜
부대육칼면 is spicy yukgaejang broth with knife-cut noodles,
loaded with the sausage and ham you’d find in budae jjigae 🌶️

Bananas grow in Korea? 🍌

Only on Jeju, where it’s warm enough —
and at Sweet Monkey you walk right through the greenhouse jungle 🌴
Those purple pods are banana flowers,
and the leaves are big enough to carry over your head 😳
It’s a proper day out with kids too, swings and all 💛

Knot Workshop 매듭공방 🪢

매듭 (maedeup) is Korean decorative knotwork — each knot tied from a single cord, and symmetrical front and back 🪢
Every pattern carries a meaning too, from health to abundance, which is why they’ve hung from hanbok, fans and purses for centuries 🌸
Donglim Knot Workshop (동림매듭공방) in Bukchon has been going since 2004, and the craft has passed down three generations of the same family ✨
Their one-day class takes 20–50 minutes, so you leave wearing something you tied yourself 💜
It’s also a Seoul-designated 오래가게, one of the city’s officially recognized long-standing shops 🏮

⚪ Silver Galchi at Jeju 🚪

갈치 (galchi) is cutlassfish — long, narrow and bright silver,
and Jeju is the best place in Korea to eat it 🐟
Here it arrives whole and grilled, stretched down the entire table.
Jeju’s is called 은갈치, “silver galchi,” ⚪
caught one at a time on a hand line instead of in a net,
so the silver skin stays perfectly intact ✨
At Daemunjib (대문집) near Hyeopjae it comes with 성게미역국 —
sea urchin and seaweed soup — plus a full table of banchan 🥢

Wind Turbines at Jeju 🌬️

Jeju has always been known as 삼다도:
the island of three abundances: wind, stone and women 🌬️
Black basalt walls, turbines turning out at sea, Jeju built Korea's very first offshore wind farm,
and today turbines line both the coastline and the water 💨
Under its Carbon Free Island 2030 plan,
the island aims to generate more renewable electricity than it actually uses,
and wind is doing most of the work ⚡

Pasta in Jeju - Soosunhwa 수선화식당 at Hyeopjae 🍝

Hyeopjae is famous for its beach — that impossible turquoise water with Biyangdo island just offshore 🏖️
But stay for lunch, because Soosunhwa (수선화식당) serves two things you can really only get on Jeju 🍽️
First, 보말파스타 — 보말 are small sea snails prised off the island's volcanic rocks, traditionally gathered by haenyeo free divers 🐚
Nutty, briny and gently chewy, somewhere between a clam and abalone ✨
Second, the pork cutlet, made with 흑돼지 —
Jeju's native black pig, prized for firmer, richer meat than you'll find on the mainland 🐖

Pink muhly season is here in Jeju 🌸

Every autumn these soft pink waves take over the field at Dochidol Ranch with alpacas in Aewol, and early October is when they look their best 🌾
The whole thing moves with the wind — the kind of scene that looks unreal until you're standing in it ✨
Go late afternoon, when the low sun lights the grass from behind 📸
