L’ARTISTE EST OUVERT For this year’s open studios at La Cale, the top floor of the building slowly mutates into a habitat, a burrow, a temporary office of legitimacy, and a zone of observation. Over the weekend I’ll be presenting paintings, traces, relics, absurd administrative documents and intermittent performances orbiting around a question that has haunted me for years: What does it mean to insist on becoming an artist in Paris today? Not the mythical Paris of painters and cafés, but a city where artists increasingly live further away, work multiple jobs, survive through invisible labor, and continuously justify their existence. As a queer Colombian painter, I often feel caught between visibility and disappearance, fascination and tolerance, desire and administration. L’Artiste est ouvert imagines the artist as a specimen under observation: sometimes visible, sometimes hidden in his burrow, oscillating between tenderness, absurdity and survival. “L’autre côté du placard” (The Other Side of the Closet) is a painting about emergence—violent, tender, and incomplete. It captures the fractured instant when one crosses the threshold of silence into visibility. The closet here is not merely a container of secrets; it is an architecture of fear, repression, and social construction—heavy, senseless, and inherited. On one side, the door is blocked by strange, brutal forms—symbols of patriarchal power and inherited shame. On the other, a contorted body writhes into light, accompanied by a dreamlike horse’s head: part nightmare, part liberation. This work evokes the psychic violence of queer revelation. Coming out is not always a triumphant declaration—it can be monstrous, ecstatic, chaotic. It is the collapse of an old self, the shattering of protection, and the beginning of something irreversibly alive. “L’autre côté du placard” invites us to witness that metamorphosis. @thenorm_art taken in Artivistas by @ser.pinzon
