Serafin Aebli is a composer and sound artist recognized for his interdisciplinary approach to music and sound. His work consistently moves beyond traditional boundaries, bringing him into 2026, he was awarded the City of Zurich’s studio residency in Berlin, further expanding his international artistic activities.

Throughout his career, Aebli has collaborated with a wide range of artists and performers, including Vivian Wang, Sumana Chandrashekar, Adarsh Shenoy, Nico Sauer, Janis Polar, and Avital Cohen, as well as ensembles and collectives such as Companie O., Alter Ego X, and Projektilart.

Concept notes:
In the audiovisual performance Digi-Tiles, image and sound interact in real time. Starting from simple diatonic melodies, complex structures and dystopian sonic landscapes gradually emerge. Distorted field recordings meet synthetic textures, creating an atmosphere that oscillates between observation and interpretation. Rhythmically edited smartphone recordings from the urban environment of Bangalore form patterns and interwoven structures that are also reflected in the music. The partly complex rhythms and irregular meters are inspired by Carnatic talas explored during a residency in India (@indianmusicexperience ).

Situated between composition and improvisation, the performance reflects the contradictions of contemporary urban life — speed and traffic congestion, connectivity and isolation — and translates them into an intense interplay of image, rhythm, and sound.

In the 76th edition of the Generator series, composer and sound artist Serafin Aebli presents Digi-Tiles, an audiovisual performance in which image and sound interact in real time. Simple diatonic melodies gradually unfold into complex structures and dystopian sonic landscapes, where distorted field recordings meet synthetic textures.
Rhythmically edited smartphone footage from Bangalore forms visual patterns that resonate in the music. Inspired by Carnatic talas explored during a residency in India, intricate rhythms and irregular meters shape a performance between composition and improvisation. Digi-Tiles reflects the tensions of contemporary urban life—speed and congestion, connectivity and isolation—translated into an immersive dialogue of image, rhythm, and sound.

Serafin Aebli transforms simple diatonic melodies into complex patterns and dystopian noise
landscapes. Distorted field recordings from different cities merge with synthetic sounds, creating
a charged tension between the auditory observation of moments and the subjective
interpretation of daily life. The live electronic set is characterized by a unique sonic aesthetic,
playing with the subversion of musical expectations generated through improvisational
performance.

DigiTala examines the paradoxical reality of modern urban life. While rapid digitalization connects us faster than ever before, the physical slowness caused by urban congestion creates physical disconnection in overcrowded cities. Using Bangalore as its focal point, it reflects on the juxtaposition of speed and stagnation, connection and isolation, and the multiplicity of narratives within a city. Visuals from moving vehicles and the soundscape of the city’s chaotic streets merge with Karnatik talas of 12, 6, 7, 8, 5 and 10 beats, drawn from the _suladi _and _chapu_ rhythmic systems. The overlapping arrangement of these diverse rhythms not only highlights the varied tempos of Bangalore but also symbolizes the city's rich cultural mosaic and the diverse backgrounds of its inhabitants. DigiTala invites participants to reflect on the complexities of urban life, where technology, culture, and human interaction continuously shape and redefine the metropolis.

@serafin_aebli is a Zurich based composer and sound artist known for his interdisciplinary approach, collaborating with musicians, dancers, theater artists, and others. With degrees in music composition, he combines deep theoretical knowledge with creative expertise. Aebli’s work explores novel sounds and techniques, often using complex loudspeaker systems to create immersive, spatial sound experiences.
