I think it’s necessary that I reintroduce myself. I’ve gone through many versions of myself over the years, but this one is the most intentional, and the one that I have worked the hardest to birth - the version of me who feels safe being seen in all my humanity, messy, and imperfect. The most subversive thing a woman can do is tell her story as if it matters, because it does - Mona Eltahawy First and last photo by @gervazlushaju & @punkandblvck respectively #artist #healing #storyteller #iwantyoutoseeme by @serati_sa

My proudest moment as an activist and a long-time dream come true. Doing @tedxpretoria was definitely the highlight of my year and an affirmation of my writing and my ideas. Smiling because I'm finally the woman I've been dreaming of being for so many years. I've gone from a background where chaos and toxicity was normal to me, to being someone who treats myself with love and care. Someone who values myself enough not to be casual about who gets access to me. Someone who is not afraid of allowing myself to be seen in my vulnerability, because I know that that is the most precious part of me. In my dysfunction I lost and destroyed many valuable things, but at last, I've finally gained myself. 🤎 by @serati_sa
Do our traditional languages have a place in our modern hyper-globalised world? There are studies that show that indigenous populations that maintain cultural continuity, in the form of their traditional languages and cultural practices, have better health outcomes than those who don't. First Nations people in Alberta Canada who speak their languages have a lower prevalence of diabetes than those who don't - they defined maintaining connection to their languages as their ability to "be who we are". Iv been reflecting on this as someone who has been healing a lifetime of suppressed childhood trauma, the trauma of colonization lives on within many of us in the form of our disconnection to our traditional languages. For more on this topic check out our project "African Face, Colonial Tongue". Link in bio. The last 4 photos were taken by my friend @nicholascalv on a day of shopping at Kariakoo Market in Dar es Salaam circa 2023 #language #culture #identity #indiginous #healing by @serati_sa
A still from Berlin Short Film Festival. African Face, Colonial Tongue is a short film that is based on an essay that I wrote, and it is an exploration of the intersection of language, culture, and identity. More soon. 🍀 #decolonialcinema #experimentalfilm #blackwomencreatives #africanfacecolonialtongue by @serati_sa
It's another loc appreciation post! I know (!!) but I'm obsessed with my locs right now, only because it's taken almost 6 years for me to feel like my hair looks like it make sense. Someone once said that dreadlocks are a long term investment, I would add specifically (semi) freeform locs, because you are not manipulating them very much, you are allowing them to form and grow according to their own intelligence. This is the lesson of my life honestly - and my locs have been the biggest teacher of this - to let go, to allow, to trust the seasons of my life, to trust the wisdom of my body and of my life, to trust my life to take me where I need to go, to trust that once I have planted the seed Divine Intelligence will get me there without me needing to interfere. This is why I say - everything we need to know we can learn from nature. We are nature. #blackgirlmagic #naturalhair #dreadlocks #blackhair #nature by @serati_sa
Some affirmations and meditations I'm taking with me into the new horse year. I'm not available for anything that remotely looks like chaos - this new era is about gentleness, deep care, and receptivity Also! I washed my locs with African Black Soap for the first time and I'm not going back! ----------- Nervous system healing, feminine rest, softness as resistance, black healing by @serati_sa
End of this year I will be 6 years deep into my semi-freeform loc journey, semi-freeform meaning I twisted it once and I have never had a retwist. I don't use any oils, gels, creams, conditioner, or color in my hair, nothing but shampoo. I started out just separating the locs every time I washed my hair, but nowadays I barely even do that, not regularly anyway. I was very intentional about wanting to take this locing process as a spiritual journey, to see who I would be if I stopped trying to maintain a certain ideal of beauty. It was the beginning of me getting out of perfectionism, and starting to embody my own authentic energy. What semi-freeform locs have taught me: - I can trust the wisdom of my body - good things take time - trust the process - my body knows what to do #iwantyoutoseeme #shameless #dreadlocks #semifreeform by @serati_sa
Last year stretched me, it expanded my heart, melted my inner armour, and dropped me into my body. I released shame, my loyalty to family dysfunction, and my fear of the unknown. I stopped abandoning myself for crumbs, I devoted myself to my Self, and I allowed myself to be deeply seen. I had to move back home temporarily to regroup, but I never gave up on my dreams. One thing about me: I'm a badass at self enquiry! I thank many years of meditation for that, and just my natural disposition (I think being an artist has something to do with it). I'm not saying it's easy, far from it, but I wonder at my ability to keep digging within myself to figure out what's blocking me, what's at the root of my self sabotage, why I'm not reaching my full potential etc etc. I'm tooting my own horn here, but I believe WE ALL have the ability to overcome our inner difficulties and to reach our full potential. Here I am sharing just a few things that have helped me on my path to overcoming anxiety, it's by no means a comprehensive list. #shameless #IWantYouToSeeMe #anxiety #mentalhealth #traumahealing #nervoussystem #seratimaseko by @serati_sa
I came across this video on Youtube the other day (yes, I YouTubed myself) from 2021, it was an interview for a ‘’Covid Concert’’ I was doing at @16neto in Mozambique. Please try to ignore my extremely bright ensemble and background, and focus instead on what I’m talking about regarding how travelling the continent has enriched me artistically. If there is anything I would say to a young African artist it is: TRAVEL! And I don’t mean to Berlin, New York, or London; I mean travel across the border, even just to another city in your own country. Travelling within southern Africa has refined my politics and broadened my scope of what it means to be a contemporary African artist. Tanzania gave me the love of the ocean, Maputo taught me how to walk, like across the whole city, and night walking - the best gift you could give a Jo’burg girl. Zimbabwe demonstrated to me how the spirit of music can truly take over the body, and Cape Town allowed me to hone in on my activism. I say this being aware of how expensive and complicated it is doing Africa travel, that is something that needs to change; but still, if I had to choose between Paris or Bamako, I’d choose Bamako! #africatravel #artist #africanartist #gypsy #seratimaseko #maputo #africanmusic #throwback by @serati_sa
