New collectors, new mediums and new ways of discovering art are reshaping the market. But when it comes to acquiring a particular work, the essential questions remain: What makes it significant, and will it continue to matter beyond the moment?

In “The Informed Collector” for the October issue of @hautelivingsf, Fran Miller writes: “The most enduring collections, though, are never built on market intelligence alone.” She quotes Serge Sorokko on how collectors can pair conviction with an informed eye:

“The informed collector today is not buying reactively. They are looking beyond the headline name and asking more disciplined questions: Where does this work sit within the artist’s oeuvre? Is the provenance strong? Has it been exhibited or published? Is it a major example, or simply an available one? The most thoughtful collectors are still guided by instinct, but increasingly pair that instinct with research, selectivity, and a long-term point of view. In this market, knowledge is not just protective — it is part of connoisseurship.”

The Ralph Rucci archive has found a home at Cornell University, where it will be preserved as one of the most comprehensive archives devoted to an American fashion designer. Its extraordinary scope includes nearly 500 garments representing more than 350 looks, together with more than 8,000 original sketches, 3,000 patterns, thousands of textile swatches, photographs, and extensive records of Rucci’s design process and atelier.

In late February 2027, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell will open a major retrospective “Ralph Rucci: Taking Dictation,” bringing his garments, archival materials, and artworks into conversation with the Museum’s collections.

For more than two decades, Serge Sorokko Gallery in San Francisco has exhibited Rucci’s art. His fashion and painting have never been separate pursuits. Both are governed by an exacting understanding of line, proportion, surface, movement, and construction. His garments possess the discipline of architecture and the sensitivity of drawing; his paintings reveal the same searching intelligence in another medium.

The Cornell archive will preserve not only the finished works, but also the thought, experimentation, and formidable technical knowledge behind them. It is a fitting record of an American master whose work has consistently dissolved the conventional boundaries between fashion and art.

The images in this carousel trace a history that is both personal and institutional.

In Richard Phillips’s “Best Picture,” looking is never entirely one-way.

As the camera moves through the gallery, twelve faces meet the viewer with unwavering directness. Writing in Parkett, cultural critic Diedrich Diederichsen observed of Phillips’s portraits, “There’s always a touch of startled recognition in their faces.”

The video makes that exchange visible: we move past the portraits, but their gaze seems to follow us. Seen together, the works become not simply a sequence of likenesses, but a roomful of distinct presences.

Now on view in Napa, “Richard Phillips: Best Picture” marks its U.S. premiere and the artist’s first exhibition with Serge Sorokko Gallery.

The feature looks at Serge Sorokko Gallery’s two First Street spaces and the two U.S. premieres currently on view in Napa.

At 1301 First Street, “Richard Phillips: Best Picture” presents the artist’s “Nominees” series — intimate pastel portraits that turn the rituals of cinema and celebrity into meditations on how cultural icons are constructed. Ross observes that standing among them feels less like being at an exhibition than being backstage at the awards themselves, “watching the myth-making up close.”

At 1500 First Street, “Vasily Klyukin: Eclipse” brings together more than 20 new and recent works — sculpture, large-scale illuminated mixed-media works, and three-dimensional paintings — in an exploration of light, technology, movement, and perception. Ross describes Klyukin’s forms as hovering “between engineering and enchantment.”

Her summation of the pairing is particularly apt: “Awards season may belong to Hollywood, but this fall, the best picture — and the best sculpture, for that matter— is showing in downtown Napa.”

Richard Phillips has established a singular position in contemporary American art through a practice that combines exacting technique with a persistent scrutiny of how images are constructed, framed, and understood. The “Nominees” drawings bring those concerns into an especially concentrated form, transforming seemingly familiar faces into images whose precision makes their very construction impossible to ignore.

In the “Best Picture” drawings, that inquiry becomes unusually concentrated. The faint grids remain visible across each composition, exposing the structure beneath faces rendered with extraordinary precision. What initially appears photographic is, on closer inspection, unmistakably the result of sustained drawing, control, and observation.

That tension between mechanical image and handmade object is central to Phillips’s importance today. At a moment when images are produced, manipulated, and consumed at unprecedented speed, his work insists on the instability of photographic authority while simultaneously restoring physical presence to the image through the artist’s hand.

Richard Phillips’s “Nominees” series begins with images already embedded in contemporary visual culture: publicity portraits, red-carpet photographs, and the polished iconography of cinema. In translating them into drawings, Phillips slows down images designed for instant recognition and turns them into sustained acts of looking.

The faces remain immediately familiar, but their function changes. Removed from the speed of media circulation, they become portraits not only of individuals, but of the systems through which celebrity is constructed, reproduced, and remembered.

Now on view at Serge Sorokko Gallery in Napa: “Richard Phillips: Best Picture.” The exhibition marks the U.S. premiere of the complete “Nominees” series of twelve original drawings and the gallery’s first presentation of the artist’s work.

For more than three decades, Phillips has been one of the defining figures of contemporary American painting. Combining technical virtuosity with a sustained investigation of advertising, fashion, entertainment, and mass media, he has established a distinctive place within international contemporary art. His work challenges conventional distinctions between fine art and popular culture, examining how beauty, desire, power, and celebrity are constructed and consumed.

In “Best Picture,” Phillips’s longstanding preoccupations find a new expression through portraits of Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Blunt, Ryan Gosling, Jacob Elordi, Bradley Cooper, and other leading actors.

Working in charcoal, chalk, and pastel, Phillips creates intimate, psychologically charged portraits whose immediacy and delicacy contrast with the monumental scale and polished surfaces of his best-known paintings. Subtle shifts in expression and gesture bring the individual into focus, revealing the complex intersection of performance, identity, and public perception—and the process through which contemporary culture turns fleeting moments into enduring collective memory.

Phillips’s work is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern, London.

Among the highlights of “Princess Diana & The Royals” exhibition now on view in the 10,000-square-foot exhibition galleries at The Shops at Crystals in Las Vegas, is Isabelle de Borchgrave’s stunning paper sculpture — a life-size recreation of Diana’s celebrated 1981 wedding gown and its 25-foot train.

Rabbits, butterflies, exotic birds, and brilliant color now animate a corridor at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Hunt Slonem’s extraordinary gift has created a gallery offering everyone who passes through it an encounter with nature, imagination and the sheer pleasure of art.

“I think nature is the most healing thing that we have, and I think a lot of the problems we have today are from lack of connection to nature,” Slonem told WKYC Studios. “I still have 10 parrots; they thrill me more than almost anything else I look at.”

What was once simply a passageway has become a destination filled with beauty, discovery and joy.
