Johnny Sober — Biography | @johnny.sober

Johnny Sober is a recovery advocate, storyteller, and creator dedicated to showing others that no matter how far addiction takes you, recovery is possible.

From an early age, Johnny lived with ADHD and later played varsity football, where he sustained multiple head injuries at a time when concussion awareness was far less understood. He often hid his injuries and played through them, eventually experiencing ongoing post-concussive symptoms and feeling as though he simply wasn’t himself. Alcohol became a way to quiet the noise, numb difficult emotions, and escape feelings he didn’t know how to process.

What began as social drinking… celebrating victories, building camaraderie, and enjoying weekends with teammates—gradually became something much darker. His drinking escalated into binge drinking, isolation, and substance abuse. Along the way, Johnny experienced devastating consequences, including four assault charges, gambling away a home, damaged relationships, and multiple stays in treatment. Yet for years, he continued to defend alcohol rather than recognize its role in the destruction around him.

Loss became another defining part of Johnny’s story. During COVID, he lost his father and was unable to be by his bedside, instead witnessing his passing over Skype. He also lost his lifelong best friend, whom he considered a brother, at just 42 years old. COVID-related delays had postponed his friend’s kidney transplant, and tragically, he suffered a heart attack while driving and passed away. The loss was profound, and the death of his uncle added another layer of grief.

Johnny was later diagnosed with prolonged grief disorder. At the time, however, he didn’t understand how to process the weight of these losses. Instead, he turned to alcohol and other substances to suppress his emotions, escape the pain, and quiet the chaos in his mind. What began as a way to cope eventually became the very thing destroying his life.

What Therapy Taught Me About Forgiveness

For the better part of a decade, I was the curator of my own museum of pain. Each resentment was an exhibit, polished and proudly displayed. Each grudge was a plaque, meticulously engraved with the date and details of wrongdoing. I was the chief historian of my own suffering, and I could recount every slight, every betrayal, every moment of neglect with the vivid precision of a documentary filmmaker.

My targets were varied and numerous: the high school teacher who dismissed my dream, the friend who broke a promise, the employer who undervalued my work, the lover who left, and the parent who, try as they might, could never be what I needed them to be. But the most frequent visitor to this gallery of grievance was, invariably, the person I saw in the mirror.

I wore my blame like a suit of armor. It felt strong, protective. It was a fortress of justification. As long as I could point the finger outward, I never had to look inward. As long as I was the victim of others’ failures, I was absolved of responsibility for my own life. This, I believed, was my strength. It was, in fact, a slow-acting poison.

My name is Billy McKay. I’m a Scottish author, recovery advocate and
someone who has been sober for more than 21 years.

But my story didn’t begin with alcohol or drugs.

Long before addiction entered my life, I was already carrying things I
didn’t understand.

As a child, experiences of shame, fear, rejection and trauma began
shaping the way I saw myself and the world around me. Like many
children, I didn’t have the language to explain what was happening
inside me. I simply made meaning from what happened.

And some of those meanings became beliefs.

There must be something wrong with me.
I’m not good enough.
I don’t belong.
I need to protect myself.
