Becoming Home, Part Two

In the final part of our recap, @sergio____p talks about what he was looking for when he turned the camera on his family and his surroundings in the Dominican Republic.

The aim was simple: capture people as they are. Keep it raw, keep it authentic, elevate it a little, but always respect the art, the culture and the people of the Bajo Mundo.

And the biggest lesson? When a project is this personal, you don’t need a big team or a perfect plan. It’s you, it’s your story, and nobody can tell it better. Trust your talent, trust your process, and do it.

For Sergio, it was just him and Juan, working the way they always have, with an easy flow and years of trust behind it. It was just enough.

As Becoming Home comes to a close, @sergio____p and @juanjosemoukonsue break down the concept and the thinking behind it. This if part one.

This is our first time co-collaborating with a photographer on a full body of work. Sergio shot and directed, Juanjose styled, and we followed their lead. The project documents Sergio’s return to the Dominican Republic after eight years away, so it was only right that the two of them explain it in their own words.

Grateful to Sergio for sharing something this personal, and for letting us be part of it.

As we round up this chapter of Becoming Home, I’ve been reflecting on what this trip meant to me and what it represents moving forward.

The motherland is something we all carry within ourselves. Sometimes it’s a memory, sometimes a person, and sometimes it takes the form of a place. Seeing these streets and these people took me back to an earlier time in my life, when I didn’t yet have the words to explain what this place meant to me.

I’m filled with gratitude for how wholesome and collaborative this process has been: the team who worked hand in hand to make it real, my family and friends, and the people we photographed, who became the heart of this story. To everyone who opened their doors and shared their time, stories and presence with us, thank you.

The photographs are only the first part. A moving image from this journey is coming soon.

Perhaps all of this is just the beginning.

It has been eight years since I last documented this place, back at the very beginning of my journey as an artist. And yet, my memories of it reach much further back — into childhood, into a time before I had the words to understand what this place meant to me.

Dominican Republic has always held a very particular place within me. A place where memory and migration, culture and tradition, past and future coexist. The motherland as a memory we are born carrying. A place of beauty, people, stories, joy, community, and everyday rituals that remind us that everything is somehow connected.

So much of the history of these communities has been shaped by displacement, exploitation and erasure. Yet, so little of their everyday lives and stories remain underrepresented within the visual histories we have inherited.

I have been back three times this year, but this was the first time I returned with a camera in my hands.

Coming back to the place where, in many ways, everything began changed something in me.

What does it mean to belong? Why can a place feel like home, even when it isn’t? Where do our bodies, memories and communities exist within the larger story of the Caribbean?

Perhaps this is what I am trying to understand.

To look through a lens and, in doing so, look deeper into myself. To trace the threads between where I come from, who I am, and everything that came before me.

There is an urgency in me, and perhaps a responsibility too, to create images of my roots. To make visible the beauty, complexity and humanity that has always been there.

I hope that one day the people of my country can look at themselves and feel pride. To see themselves not through the eyes of someone looking in, but through the tenderness of someone who belongs to the story.

To everyone who gave their time, trust, energy and love to this work — thank you. I carry a piece of each of you with me.

BECOMING HOME; A project by Sergio Pontier and Seventh.

@sergio____p is a 23 year old Dominican-Spanish visual artist based in Spain. His Dominican side of the family lives on the island, a place he first began photographing in 2018, at the very beginning of his journey as a photographer. Eight years have passed since he last returned.

Seventh’s ethos is built around home, and capturing that idea from different perspectives. So Sergio and Seventh came together on something very personal to him. Shot and directed by Sergio, styled by @juanjosemoukonsue .

Even after eight years, the distance never erased his connection to the island. His memories of the country reach back to childhood, to the summers spent visiting family, the places he knew, and the experiences that became part of his earliest memories.

For Becoming Home, Sergio went back with a camera in hand, documenting it for the first time in years. Through family, friends, and locals, as well as the landscapes, textures, and everyday moments of the island, the project becomes a visual exploration of memory, belonging, and return. It asks what home means, where it lives, and whether it can still feel like home after years away.

Becoming Home also marks our Pre AW26 launch, the very first glimpse of the season, featuring the Denim OVL Jeans in Storm Wash.

Wearing Seventh Pre AW26 launching 8th September, Becoming Home reflects on the space between where you come from and who you become, and on the idea that home can exist not only in a place, but in the memories and experiences we carry with us.

Because sometimes, home is not simply the place you return to. It is the part of you that never really left.
