Yesterday, I lost my best friend to cancer.

Part of me finds peace knowing that after five years of fighting, Colton can finally rest and be at peace in heaven. But another part of me wishes we could take one more trip, share one more laugh and drink, watch one more movie, eat one more Kopp’s frozen custard, or go on one more spontaneous adventure together.

But I know Colton is still here with us, just in a different way.

For those who don’t know Colton, he is one of the kindest and most caring people you could ever meet. His love and support for his friends are unconditional. More than anything, Colton shows up.

Whether it’s a dance show, choir or band concert, school presentation, research presentation, soccer game, volleyball game, birthday dinner, or an intramural game that needs one more person, Colton is there. Most of the time, you don’t even have to ask. He just knows how much it means to you.

That is who Colton is. He puts the people he loves before himself and gives them his time without ever expecting anything in return. People like Colton are incredibly rare. He values the people in his life more than anything in the world, and he always makes sure we know it.

Colton is also one of the funniest people I know. He never hesitates to be weird, goofy, or completely himself, no matter where he is or who is around. He has a way of making everyone smile. He listens when you need someone, cheers you up when you’re down, and somehow turns a bad moment into a memory you can laugh about.

We lived together for five years, and when I look back, I struggle to think of the bad memories because whenever I am down, Colton finds a way to make things better. The memories that stay with me are the ones filled with laughter, adventures, and all the ridiculous moments we share.

One of the things I admire most about Colton is the love he has for his family. His family means everything to him. He calls his parents almost every day, goes home whenever he can to spend time with the people he loves, is an uncle his nephew can look up to, and shares a special bond with his sister Leah.

Colton is also one of the smartest, most dedicated, and driven people I know. He by @sergioleudo
