Maya Deren the mother of avant-garde film

In 1943, Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid made Meshes of the Afternoon at their home in Los Angeles with a 16mm Bolex and almost no budget.

The 14-minute film follows a woman (played by Deren) who comes home, dozes off, and falls into a dream that keeps repeating. Every time it loops, the same objects come back and mean something a little darker. She meets copies of herself, stairs stretch on forever, and the line between sleeping and waking disappears.

It has no dialogue and no conventional plot. It runs on dream logic, built from match cuts, slow motion, handheld subjective camera and impossible continuity, so a single step can carry her from sand to grass to pavement to carpet.

Deren called it a film about how the inner life turns an ordinary event into a critical emotional experience.

More than 80 years later, its influence still shows up in David Lynch, music videos and almost every surreal short made since.

It’s proof that you don’t need resources to make something unforgettable. You need a vision and the nerve to follow it. 🎞️

one of my favorite photo series of all time!

Kitchen Table Series (1990) by @carriemaeweems

For this series, Carrie Mae Weems staged and photographed a fictional drama in which she plays the lead. The setting is always the same: a small room with a table and a single overhead light. Other cast members play lovers, friends, and daughters.

From this modest setup, the artist creates an entire world. The kitchen, traditionally considered a female space, has rarely been pictured as a site of importance. Weems turns this idea on its head. She suggests the kitchen table is the real stage where life’s biggest moments play out, and where the full range of human emotions is expressed.

The series compellingly examines women’s lives. It boldly asserts, in particular, Black womanhood’s complexity, strength, and beauty.
