Elon Musk’s philosophy was visible at Tesla and SpaceX, where engineers were expected to work directly on technical problems instead of passing decisions through layers of management.

He believes that a small number of exceptional people can outperform much larger teams when they are highly capable and intensely motivated.

A 2012 study in PLOS ONE found that four days in the wilderness with no electronics raised scores on a creative problem solving test by 50 percent.

Ruth Ann Atchley and Paul Atchley of the University of Kansas ran it with David Strayer of the University of Utah.

The 56 participants were on Outward Bound backpacking trips in Alaska, Colorado, Maine, and Washington, and phones were banned.

People tested before the hike averaged 4.14 correct out of 10 on the Remote Associates Test.

People tested on the morning of day four averaged 6.08.

The authors said the design could not separate the effect of nature from the effect of leaving technology behind.

A $2.6 million home in San Francisco can cost more than 100 times a $22,000 house in rural Japan, but the comparison hides a major difference.

A couple recently bought an abandoned farmhouse near Hakuba, Japan, for $22,000, paying ¥3.6 million for the property before fees and moving in after completing the purchase in 2026.

The house was far from move in ready, with outdated facilities, overgrown land and major renovation work still required, which is typical of the low priced akiya market.

Japan has roughly 9 million vacant homes, creating a huge supply of properties that can sell for a fraction of what homes cost in major American cities.

@kalshi traders now price the chance of a US recession this year at nearly 0 percent, down from 5 percent in September and 10 percent in June.

The contract pays only if the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports two consecutive quarters of negative real GDP growth in 2025 or 2026.

It does not wait for the National Bureau of Economic Research to declare a recession.

Advance estimates already showed positive growth in the first two quarters of 2026, at 2.1 percent and 1.5 percent.

With one quarter left, two straight negative prints this year are no longer possible on the published data. by @series

Naval Ravikant’s philosophy is to develop valuable skills, create things people want and build a reputation for delivering, so opportunities begin coming through the people who recognize your work.

That changes networking from asking, “Who can help me?” to “What can I become so valuable at that people want to work with me?”

Elon Musk has said he learned an important leadership lesson from studying Napoleon.

While watching a Starship booster being built at SpaceX’s Boca Chica site, Musk told biographer Walter Isaacson, “If they see their general on the battlefield, they will be more motivated.”

Isaacson said Musk studies military history because he believes lessons from war can apply to corporate leadership, and noted that Musk often showed up late at night on Tesla and SpaceX production lines. by @series

Jim Simons founded Renaissance Technologies and launched the Medallion Fund in 1988, building a trading system around mathematical models, data and automated decision making.

From 1988 through 2018, Medallion generated an average annual gross return of about 66%, with roughly 39% annually after fees, according to published reconstructions of the fund’s performance.

At that gross rate, a hypothetical $100 invested in 1988 would have grown to roughly $399 million by 2018, before fees, although this is a mathematical illustration rather than an amount an outside investor could actually have earned.

The strategy became so capacity constrained that Medallion was closed to outside investors, with the fund ultimately reserved for Simons, Renaissance employees and their families.

Nvidia hit a new all time high on October 2, 2026, with shares reaching $237.55 intraday and pushing the company’s market capitalization to roughly $5.7 trillion.

The move marked Nvidia’s first record since May, extending a rally of nearly 25% from its late July low.

Nvidia has gained about 27% in 2026, with investors continuing to bet on demand for AI infrastructure and increasingly powerful computing systems.

The rally also followed Nvidia’s announcement of an additional $150 billion share buyback authorization, bringing its total remaining authorization to $235 billion through fiscal 2028.

At roughly $5.7 trillion, Nvidia is now less than $300 billion away from becoming the first company to reach a $6 trillion market capitalization.

SoftBank’s $30 billion commitment was paid in three $10 billion tranches across April, July, and October 1, 2026. Combined with its previous backing, SoftBank has now poured $64.6 billion into OpenAI, securing roughly a 13% ownership stake.

Rather than relying purely on liquid cash on hand, SoftBank borrowed heavily. To fund this final payment, it issued $11.1 billion in high-yield corporate bonds in late September 2026 to pay down its bridge loans.

This payout is part of a massive $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion valuation that OpenAI established earlier in 2026.

Other major tech giants completed huge commitments in the same deal, notably Amazon ($50 billion) and Nvidia ($30 billion total).

Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett repeatedly demonstrated this at Berkshire Hathaway by concentrating capital into a relatively small number of exceptional investments rather than forcing themselves to make deals every month.

Munger said Berkshire’s 15 best investments showed how few decisions were needed to drive most of the results, while investors who constantly needed new deals often “cratered.”
