Winter skies in northern hemisphere are dominated by the Orion constellation.
Last night in Lahore offered a decent opportunity so I grabbed a DSLR after midnight for some fun and simple astrophotography while hoping to get a possible hint of winter Milkyway from Bortle 9 skies of Lahore.

The results show a total of 30 minutes integration time shot on a Canon 700D with the 18mm kit lens.

NGC 457, the Owl Cluster. It's a beautiful open star cluster about 8,000 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. The cluster is estimated to be about 21 million years old.

Telescope: Seestar S50
Integration time: 1 hour
Tools used: Siril, GraXpert, GIMP
Script mentions: CosmicClarity Sharpen, SyQon Prism Mini
Bortle 8-9
A diffraction mask was used for the star spikes

A simulated trip to NGC 7789, a star cluster commonly known as Caroline's Rose, located 7600 light years away.

The steam app Space Engine was used to simulate this.

NGC 7789, better known as Caroline's Rose, is an open star cluster about 7,600 light-years away. Its nickname comes from the way its stars and dark lanes curl together like rose petals. This star cluster is approximately 1.6 billion years old and many of its brighter stars have already evolved into red giants, which helps astronomers measure the cluster's age!

My longest project yet! Been on this galaxy since around the start of September.

The Triangulum Galaxy, also known as Messier 33. It's a face-on spiral galaxy about 2.7 million light-years away. It is the third largest member of our Local Group, after the Milky Way and Andromeda. This galaxy was the perfect target for my telescope as it's just big enough to fit into the whole field of view!

Integration time: 12 hours
Tools used: GraXpert, Siril, GIMP
Script mentions: CosmicClarity Sharpen, HDR_multiscale, SyQon Prism Mini, VeraLux (Curves and Revela)

The Tulip Nebula. It's an emission nebula in the Cygnus constellation around 8,000 light years away. It is about 70 light-years across and its name was inspired from its petal-like shape

Telescope: Seestar S50
Integration time: 9 hours
Tools used: Siril, GraXpert, GIMP
Script mentions: CosmicClarity Sharpen, SyQon Prism Mini, VeraLux Revela/Curves, HDR_multiscale

Messier 15, a dense globular cluster located roughly 33,600 light years away and about 12 billion years old. Spanning about 200 light-years across, more than half its stars are packed into the central 10 light-years alone, making it one of the densest concentrations of stars known.

Telescope: Seestar S50
Integration time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Tools used: Siril, GraXpert, GIMP

Messier 71. A globular cluster in the constellation of Sagitta. It's about 13,000 light-years away. For a long time astronomers debated whether it was a loose open cluster or a globular cluster. Now, it's recognized as one of the Milky Way’s sparse globular clusters. It's estimated to be as old as 9 - 10 billion years

Image of Saturn stacked from a ~30 second clip I managed to capture after days of trial and error. The most mind boggling part is that this was done through my phone attached to the telescope eyepiece 🤯

Telescope: Celestron Starsense LT 80AZ
Data: ~30 seconds video
Tools used: PIPP, AutoStakkert, waveSharp 3, GIMP
Eyepiece: 10mm eye piece with 2x barlow (180x maginification)

N Sge 2026. A Nova discovered just recently on 25th August. This little point of light is much brighter than it usually is for the coming few days or weeks.

Telescope: Seestar S50
Integration time: 1 hour
Tools used: Siril, GraXpert, GIMP
Note: Star spikes were achieved through a custom diffraction mask

NGC 6960 - The Western Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant located roughly 2400 light years away. What you're looking at is one side of a literal "shockwave" from a star that exploded long ago.

This is the west side of the Easter Veil Nebula image I posted a while ago. They are both the same supernova remnant 🙂

Integration time: 9 hours
Tools used: Siril, GraXpert, GIMP
