Tigers are incredible at recognizing the people who care for them. When they chuff, it’s their way of greeting not just other tigers, but also their trusted caretakers. #bigcats taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Similar to domestic cats, large felines react to the catnip’s plant essential oil, nepetalactone, by rubbing, rolling, and acting playful, which helps improve their mental and physical well-being. It serves as a stimulating scent activity & enrichment that keeps animals active and engaged in their environments. Just like domestic cats, not all big cats react to catnip—it is a hereditary trait, and some individuals may not be interested. Here you can see the different cats at ZWF react differently! #bigcats taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Onyx enjoying a whole prey feeding that mimics natural feeding behavior❤️‍🔥Jaguars are highly adaptable, obligate carnivores and opportunistic apex predators that consume over 85 different species. They will eat almost any animal they encounter, including capybaras, caimans, turtles, and tapirs. The jaguar has the strongest bite force of all felids, relative to its size. Despite being smaller than lions or tigers, its specialized jaw musculature delivers a bite force of approximately 1,500 pounds per square inch (PSI), allowing it to crush turtle shells and caiman skulls. #bigcats #jaguar taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Bonnie & Clyde, our Asian small clawed otters at @zwfmiami, enjoy a natural diet that mirrors what they eat in the wild. Whole fish contain essential minerals, collagen, and Omega-3s found in the skin, bones, and organs required for their fast-metabolism lifestyles. In the wild, otters use their whiskers to detect prey movement in the water and their forepaws to catch it. Placing whole fish into the water allows them to practice these instinctual hunting and foraging skills🦦🐠💕🎏 #otter #animals Book an otter encounter today on the ZWF Miami website to feed these cuties yourself! taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Baby capuchin monkeys are born with a strong grasping reflex & positioned on the back or belly for warmth, safety, & nourishment. On their first day, baby capuchin monkeys are extremely fragile, often with closed eyes, relying entirely on the mother. ZWF is so proud and grateful to welcome this new baby into the world. It is truly an honor to contribute to conservation and increasing the population of this special animal!🐒🌎❤️ #monkey #babyanimals taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Lion tongues are covered in sharp, backward-pointing spines called papillae, which allow them to scrape meat off bones and remove fur. You can see Max here licking the whole prey I gave him! Lions are highly possessive of their kills and will defend them fiercely from scavengers like hyenas in the wild, which is why Max quickly got territorial over today’s enrichment. A lion’s stomach is incredibly acidic (pH ~1.3), which is strong enough to dissolve bones. By eating every part of the animal, lions are able to meet all their nutritional needs as obligate carnivores. 🦁❤️#bigcats #lion by @servalsoph

Jaguars are apex predators with an exceptionally diverse diet and unique feeding methods, consuming over 85 different species of whole prey. As the largest cat in the Americas, they are known for their immense bite force, which allows them to consume prey ranging from small rodents to large reptiles and mammals. In captivity, offering whole prey significantly increases feeding time and stimulates natural behaviors such as tearing, chewing, and crushing, which are not triggered by ground meat. #bigcats #jaguar by @servalsoph

Amur leopards are the rarest big cats in the world and we are so lucky that Vladim calls ZWF home🩷 They are critically endangered but fortunately their wild population is steadily increasing due to conservation efforts. These beautiful leopards can leap 19ft horizontally and jump 10ft high! In the wild, they can take down prey up to 3x their size. They are ambush hunters that hide in the treetops and use camouflage to stalk their prey. The rosettes that make up their beautiful coats are unique like human fingerprints, which allows individuals to be identified in the wild. Vladim is so so gorgeous! #bigcats taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

Cats purr at a therapeutic frequency range—typically between 25 and 150 Hertz. Frequencies at 25–50 Hz are particularly effective for bone fracture healing, while 100–150 Hz supports soft tissue repair and pain relief. Studies indicate that being around a purring cat can reduce blood pressure, lower stress, and potentially help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans. #serval #cats taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph

The cuban crocodile is the most aggressive and smartest of the crocodile species. It is also the most terrestrial crocodile, meaning it is highly adapted to land and can run up to 22mph. It exhibits highly intelligent behavior unusual for crocodilians. They can be trained to come up to zookeepers when called! The Cuban crocodile, while not a particularly large species, is often regarded as the most aggressive New World crocodile. It is behaviorally dominant over the larger American crocodile in areas where the two species coexist. This special animal is critically endangered and captive breeding programs seek to help the population. #crocodile #wildlife taken in Zoological Wildlife Foundation by @servalsoph
