These drills felt weird at first but since becoming an instructor and learning the 6 fundamentals of snowboarding. I realized that they are great for challenging your board control.

1. Penguin Walk
Shift your weight to one foot, pivot, then shift your weight to the other foot then pivot. If this feels hard you can start with the 180 nose pivots.

2. 180 Nose Pivots
Shift your weight onto your nose and use your upper body to rotate 180 around the front of your board.
Then do it the other direction.
This teaches you how to move your board by combining weight shift and upper body rotation.

3. Frontside → Backside Nose Press
Shift your weight onto your nose and hold a frontside nose press.
Then transition into a backside nose press.
This drill trains counter-rotation and helps you stay balanced while pressing and moving.

4. One Foot Carves
Take one foot out and try carving with just your front foot controlling the board.
It forces you to find stability, edge control, and balance through your front foot.

5. Backside Nose Press → Counter Rotate Out
Press into a backside nose press and then use your upper body to counter-rotate out to the frontside.
This builds the ability to spin, stop rotation, and control momentum.

6. Nose Up (Heel Edge)
Bend your knees, shift your weight slightly forward, then rock onto your tail while pulling your front foot up.
Use the board to rock yourself upward and try to hold the position for a second.

7. Nose Up (Toe Edge)
Same movement on the toe edge.
Rock on t, lift the nose, and hold it briefly at the top.
The goal is to control the lift so the nose gets high and the movement looks clean.

Snowboarding isn’t just about sending tricks.
A lot of progression comes from understanding how your body moves the board.

Save this for your next practice day.

And I’m curious — which one of these would you try first?

Thank you @thebutterdojo for sharing your groundtrick training and knowledge 🫶🏼.

How do you fall… without wrecking your body?

Behind every “clean” trick clip you see online are tons of falls you don’t see. Falling isn’t a failure — it’s part of the process. Wherever you are in your journey, you’ve got this. Progress can be 1% at a time.

Here are a few falling principles that have helped me make falls hurt less and get back up for the next try:

• Get low. The lower you are, the less you have to fall. If I’m slipping out heelside, I drop my butt low and roll onto my back instead of slamming straight down.
• Disperse the impact. I don’t stop the fall in one place. Butt → back → slide. Let your body absorb it instead of one spot taking everything.
• Don’t catch with your arms. If my hands hit, they keep moving — hands → elbows → back — never locking and stopping the fall.
• Toe edge = spread out. If I catch toeside, I splay my body so the force spreads across hands, arms, and body instead of knees or wrists.

These aren’t rules — just small adjustments that have helped me make falling hurt less. The first time you fall is scary and you can’t tell where it comes from. Now, if I feel an edge catch, my body anticipates it and is better at preparing to disperse the fall across my body versus catch myself with 1 body part which is more dangerous.

What falling tips have helped you protect your body? I’d love to learn from you.

Also, I wear ice skating butt pads and knee pads which I LOVE. They have saved my tailbone every time.

I used to think getting better at snowboarding meant finding the perfect board or waiting for more mountain days.
But honestly… it wasn’t that.

It was the hours I put in off-snow — falling off mats in my garage, repeating the same movements until my legs finally understood what my brain was asking for.
It didn’t look cool. It didn’t feel like progress at first.
But those tiny reps changed everything.

When I got back on snow, I finally felt like I could control my board more, turn better, try stuff more easily, feel more confident in my body in my board.

Sometimes the thing that changes your riding the most isn’t what you buy or where you ride —
it’s how many times you show up for yourself when no one’s watching.

Do you ever feel scared right before you drop in — even when you know you can do it?

I used to think that fear meant I wasn’t ready.
That if I just got “better,” the fear would disappear.
But it never really does.

What changed for me was learning how to move with fear — not fight it.
Practicing off snow gave me space to learn without the pressure.
No speed, no drop-offs, no eyes watching — just me, my board, and time to build control.

Every rep taught my body how to respond instead of freeze.
So when I get on snow, fear doesn’t run the show anymore — I do.

If you’ve been waiting to feel fearless, maybe you don’t need to.
You just need to start where you feel safe enough to try.
