Critical Review: The Weight of Arrival
by Anna Gvozdeva

The Weight of Arrival is a thoughtful, technically controlled and emotionally resonant body of work whose best images transform documentary architecture into a contested space between permanence and reinvention. Its current directness is a strength; introducing more ambiguity and site-specific resistance would make it an even more substantial artistic achievement.

I’m honored that my poster was selected among the Selected Posters at Graphic Stories Cyprus.
This work began with a verse inspired attributed to Ahmad Shamlou:

“At the end of this dead end,
there is the scent of freedom…”

For me, this poem was not merely a few words; it was a voice rising from the dark, from between closed walls, from a place where hope still finds a way through.
A dead end is not always an ending.
This poster was created during days when Iran was once again paying a heavy price for freedom; days when pain, anger, grief, and hope stood side by side.
And yet, I still believe that even from the most closed paths, even from the coldest silences, the scent of freedom will one day emerge.

My sincere thanks to the members of @graphicstoriescyprus
Special thanks to my dear friend @behnamraeesian

The Distance of a Glance:

is a series of approximately ten black-and-white street photographs exploring fleeting encounters between strangers in urban space. Situated between observation and uncertainty, the project considers what it means to see another person without being able to know their story.

One of the places I’ve recently started loving photographing is through the windows of restaurants and cafés—people on the other side of the glass.

The excitement in this girl’s face, and the way this boy looked at her with such tenderness, stayed with me.

A perfect embodiment of:

“Sit down, let me simply watch you.”

Or, as Malek Jahan Khatun beautifully put it:

“Sit within my soul,
so I may lay my head at your feet.”

Truth finds its way.

This poster was created around the idea of truth as an icon of freedom.

Freedom begins when we dare to see, question, and step through.
