new direction work for “foil”

an experimental film exploring the pressures of being an artist under constant observation and consumption. there’s this space between creation and self-reflection where the fear of being perceived, creative block, and self-doubt exist. at its core, it’s about how we navigate these experiences and continue to create in spite of them.

For Dawn is a short film rooted in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran (2022–2023), and we’re honored to have our Ontario premiere at the Canadian Film Fest during Persian New Year.

As we celebrate the coming of spring, I hope it brings a new dawn for my weary country, and freedom from the shadow of dictatorship.

For years, I would attend @canfilmfest and sit in the audience watching some of the most incredible films. It always felt like such a special celebration of Canadian cinema.
I still can’t quite believe that this year, on the 20th anniversary of Canadian Film Fest, FOR DAWN will have its Ontario premiere there. It feels incredibly surreal.
Thank you to the festival for welcoming our film into this milestone edition.
And to every single person who poured their heart and soul into this project, this moment belongs to all of you. Your trust, passion, and dedication made this film possible. I am endlessly grateful.
See you at CFF.

A HUGE Thank you @whisfilmfest for welcoming FOR DAWN with such warmth and support. It is an honor to receive the Haebler Award and an Honorable Mention for Best Canadian Short.
My heartfelt gratitude to the Haebler family for establishing this award to champion women and non-binary filmmakers. I am deeply thankful to be among its first recipients.
To my cast and crew: this achievement belongs to all of us. Thank you for your passion, trust, and relentless heart. FOR DAWN is our shared victory.

And thank you to @canada.council for making this project possible and @torontofilmschool for giving me the tools that shaped this film.

So grateful. So inspired. Until next time, Whistler!

Directed by Setareh Saleh, “For Dawn” is a narrative short film set inside an Iranian girls' high school. A story shaped by desire for freedoem, courage, and the choice to keep fighting even when it breaks you.
This film is made in honour of the women who refuse to stop fighting. May your fire burn ever so brighter. #womanlifefreedom
